3rd Party Products

Hey all. I thought I'd start a thread to see what third party companies are interested in working with Red. Our company has been working for 5 years on a low-cost moco rig that's accessible to the average joe. We are following the same business plan as Red, that is make the device as portable and cost conscious as possible and try to get community feedback during development.

Heres some pictures of what were working on... Anybody else have some ideas for 3rd party products?

How much for the Motion Control system? I know the ones out there right now are 75-155 thousand dollars.

I know I am, even though I am not a company (just an individual). Who knows though, the product I want to build for myself - well, it may just turn out that others would like to buy one for themselves. I'm OK with that! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Out of curiosity, did RED provide you with the 3D model for their camera?

Its probably going to be around the same price as RED, maybe even cheaper.

Nope, good old fashioned reverse engineering from photos and renderings from their site. I would love to get a real model from them so I could make actual brackets and such but I haven't been in contact with them as of yet. They're probably still taking care of overflow from last week.

mmm.. might be a cool contest to have to see who can "design" the coolest aftermarket accessory for the RED ONE. of course it would be great to know exactly what the specs of the camera will be, but I think they got the design pretty much down.

looks cool, what is it?
Motion control? In what way. (i am new, trying to learn about this stuff)

Jarred, That would be a fun competition, especially since I have a head start :). Maybe Red will release some preliminary dimensions for their mounting scheme shortly. If anyone wants the model of the camera I made they can shoot me an email and I'd be glad to send it out. Its totally eye-balled dimensions but close enough for mocking up accesories. I'll see if I can post a link to it shortly.

Motion control is basically a way to record and repeat a camera movement. You can grab the handle on the head and move the camera around then press a button and the head will reproduce the move exactly the same as many times as you like. You can composite multiple shots together and it will look like they were all done at once. So you can do effects like duplicating actors (like Mr Smith in the matrix), timelapse, stopmotion, make crowds look bigger, make things appear and dissappear in a scene, ghosting effects, and shoting forground/background elements at different frame rates. And it can all be done while the camera is moving. Here's an example - Keep in mind that we only used one truck in this shot...

Ok, here's the model - you will need a cad program that can open Iges files. If I feel up to it I may model up the cage this weekend. The download is about 21mB....

Just updated the model... now it has the back and lcd side detailed. -C

Yeah.. well Its still missing the details on the rear and the left side, so there aren't any buttons or lcd screen. I'm gonna see if I can do that this weekend as well.

Very Cool. Motion control for $30k and a 4k camera kit for $30k. Too soon to tell for sure, but a revolution looks to be in the wind. :)

EDIT: Does Jarred's tag say 84,000 posts? DAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMNNNNN!!!!!!!

Actually when I said ours was going to be about the same as the camera I was referring to the body. So the moco is closer to $17-18K.
