Would it be possible to mount two Red Ones together to make a 3D image? I see 3D as the way of the future. Geoerge Lucas is working on the original Star Wars trillogy in 3D, even though it was never shot in 3D. It's a long and difficult process, but it should work. I would like a rack that you can put two Red Ones on and edit the whole movie on the left and on the right seperatley. Do you think that RED would ever want to make something like that?

How do they do that, put a movie in 3d that was never shot in 3d?
I've heard they are interested in doing it with Titanic and LOTR too...

If you can afford 2 Reds- there is nothing to stop you from making your own 3D rig.

I recall Jim asking on the CML lists about the right distance between the two sensors for 3D work. Or maybe that was the SI folks...
Considering the low cost of the camera, Red might be a good candidate for 3D work.

It requires extensive rotoscoping and filling in of backgrounds (I forget the term of the latter). In every shot, the layers have to be roto'ed into seperate layers from that 2D image. And then some of the holes in the background have to be filled in.

One of the problems with the process is that you can't have transparency in the foreground layers... so things like hair will look a little wrong.

This is what I remember from talking to someone who did work for Imax 3D.

The Red cameras don't have to necessarily sit side by side in parallel. You can have two lenses in parallel with optimal stereo separation and then they focus on a mirror system set at 45 degrees. Both cameras essentially face each other.

Of course the rig is a lot wider than a normal camera system, but the compact size of the cameras should keep that reasonble.

Shoot with a split optic@4K... never loose sync and the rig stays easy to work with.

I think that all of these ideas are good. But It hink that Robert has a pretty good idea, it seems easy yet complicated. I would think that I could modify the RED CAGE to attach to each other... or not. I would think that the lenses would be too far apart. Maybe tomorrow when we hear more about the Red One, I will see what I can do.

I think shooting it in 2D would be a little hard for the whole rotoscoping process.

Canon Created a 3D lens system for the XL series of cameras and it worked fairly well...The Lens cost around $9,000......I saw it demonstrated at the DV Convention in Long Beach around 7 years ago.....Norman

3d future and smell o rama

3d future and smell o rama

I personally don't think that 3d movies are the future of cinema. Last thing I saw in 3d was Superman in imax and it was just tiring and unsatisfactory. Its ok for kid movies and for the ocassional park ride. I would rather believe virtual reality is the cinema of the future.

Also, I prefer if they keep developing the technology Terrence Malick was using to create smells during the exhibition of The New World. That is something worth while. Just please no scatological jokes.
