3000th post... not what I'd planned

So I've been away from the boards for a while. I was parked at 2999 and planning on something fun for 3000. Instead, I'm sitting in a hospital room with my mother, who is at the end of a year-long battle with cancer.

This is the hardest part. Even though we've had a year (almost exactly) since the diagnosis - a year to think about it, a year to prepare - I'm still not ready for this. Not at all.

I'm 33. My mother is 62 - way too young. She held up quite well for most of the last year, but started declining only in the last few days. Admitted on Tuesday, we've sat here each day, watching her struggle under heavy sedation, waiting for the inevitable. Of course, she's a bit stubborn and is hanging on longer than she should.

This sucks. There's no better way to say it. It sucks. Watching some one die an inch at a time is frustrating, saddening, and quite honestly... exhausting.

I figured it was time to get back to the forum rather than hanging back to leave room for something that I do not have the time, much less the spiritual or emotional energy, to complete any time soon. This is a good place to hang out, and despite a few toxic attitudes that have popped up it is full of some really cool people. Some we know, some we don't, but it's a great place nonetheless. And I need to be in a great place right now.

I ask for whatever you have, be it prayer or positive thoughts or "good vibes," not just for me, but for my family, and especially for my mother. We've all told her we love her. We've all told her that it's okay to let go. True to form, she's doing this on her own terms.

Thanks to all the great folks around here for being what they are.

Peace,
Alex

Alex, Id consider you an integral member of this forum - someone who's added a lot in the past and asked for little in return.

You and yours are in my prayers.

I'm feeling your pain brother. Godspeed on to your mother as she embarks on the next
part her spiritual journey.
As peace finds her, she's the lucky one remember? It's you who must keep fighting...

Thoughts and prayers are with you Alex. It is so damn brutally hard. Know that you are where you need to be, trust that she feels the love though the fog. May you both have peace.

Alex - we are hear when you need a listening post, or rant or rave... prayer for you and family

I have to agree with Noel. You are quite generous with your areas of expertise, requesting only that civility on the boards prevails.

My prayers are with you. At some point, I recommend reading Philip Roth's Patrimony, his account of his father's decline. You may find some solace there.

Praying for your family. Its tough now but eventually fond memories of your mom will replace the pain of loss.

My heart goes out to you and your family. It's never a pleasant experience.
I had forgotten how much I miss my own mom until I saw your thread.. moms are the best gift ever!
Make sure you hug the ol lady at least every 3 seconds!

Alex,

My mother died instantly when she was 50 in a car accident with the the rest of my family, they fell off a cliff while going on a prayer pilgrimage on a good friday.
I had to leave her body at the side of the cliff for my friends and bystanders to take care of while I tended to my father, sister and brother in the emergency room.

I feel your pain in this situation, count yourself blessed with TIME to prepare and contemplate, not much for your mother as we know she will go to a better place, but for us, the living, the ones who will be left behind that will deal with a sometimes shitty world.

You and your family have my prayers.

I know what you're going through. I lost my mom to cancer when I was 29 and she was 65.
She got this really rare and unusual form of lung cancer that only happens to like 14 people per year, so they don't know how to treat it. Everybody reacts differently to treatments and it's all about finding what works for the individual so when it's an unusual cancer like that it's all trial and error. She struggled for three years with the best doctors around, but that's a really long time to be on chemo.

I hope your family can pull together instead of being torn apart by this.
