3 HMC150 questions

3 Questions

  • 1) Is the HMC150 broadcast quality?
  • 2) Can you use a DVX100A battery with a HMC150?
  • 3) Seems the HMC150 has been out on the market for a few years. Is an updated version/new revision planned?
I’m on the fence buying this model – I need to get a few for some multi-cam shooting, but I’m not convinced the quality will be of sufficient quality level to be taken serious by a broadcast station.

Thanks in advance for any and all comments, suggestion, etc

Broadcast quality means???? It produces beautiful video, as others have indicated.

Batteries aren't compatible.

Only Panasonic knows and don't expect anything soon IMO.

It is near Broadcast quality... if a station require 4:2:2 color space like DVCProHD.

But, if a station accept the EX1, that is Mpeg2 4:2:0 at 35 Mps, they should also accept the AVCHD footage. Barry Green compared the two formats in another thread and the AVCHD footage in PH mode was even a little bit better if I remember.

Broadcast Quality? All I can say is that I have done a number of national commercials and infomercials that were shot with the hmc 150, edited on final cut, and delivered on beta sp and digital beta and never had a complaint from a network or tv station.

Yeah, "broadcast quality" is pretty subjective without a specified set of criteria. But unless the broadcaster has very specific requirements (like Discovery Channel), there is nothing wrong with it. Quality is on par with the HPX170 and EX1.

Besides, I live in the #14 market and have seen TV spots on cable that were absolute crap in terms of quality. If you turn in a spot or show that is well lit and shot and just looks good, I doubt they'll care it was shot on a $3,500 camera.

[edit] I just realized this was my 1,000th post. I was expecting balloons and fireworks or something :)
