2x anamorphic is too narrow :( - solution?

thanks for the patience with me !

so now i just wonder about:

- the chances of getting 4:3 - 1440X1080 ?

- will it be possible to get the full sensor image (like 1X1 still mode) ? through HDMI, that is... ?

- there is still the question of how well the 1440X2 stretch and then cropped to 1920 will survive in terms of quality (anyone tried this on big screening somehow?)

thanks :)

If the 2560 is to be cropped to 1920, then 2560x1080 will become 1920x810 (from 1920 / 2.37) for showing on an HD (16:9) screen, so there will be letterboxing.

Other than that, the horizontal resolution of anamorphic, because of the stretch, is of course degraded. Yet i wouldn't worry too much about it. For HD tv it will be enough, and for big screen it might be something like Black Swan, which is filmed in 16mm and on DSLR, i don't know.

Getting the focus with the two lenses correct is my biggest concern, and risks being much more of a degrading factor, than lack of resolution. Of course a RED Epic will give you far better quality both in terms of resolution and dynamic range.

well you're talking about theoretical 4:3 mode. who knows if and when, and how reliable it will be ?

and about RED:
don't worry , i AM saving the 6000$ for the Scarlet (this time, almost certain mass release towards end of 2011) ...

but i made a vow i must finish at least one serious film (feature length) with the GH2.
that's why i have to decide about anamorphic.
and until 4:3 mode, i don't think it's worth it. the 2X budget lens, that is.
(if you add the 3840 resolution loss + focus + longer and complicated shooting + lens sharpness condition....)
the res loss is the real deal breaker for me.
there's that new theory about working on a 4K project so you stretch to 3840 X 1080 so you get a poor man's 4K ( 'suppose' to render out less quality loss somehow)
but who's gonna count on 4K cinema projectors here in Israel ????? they may have only 1 for IMAX...
so in 2-3 years i'll have the Scarlet anyway.

In your case, i'd buy a 1.33x anamorphic, like the Century one or the generic adapter, or maybe the Panasonic LA7200, you sometimes find on eBay. You won't need to focus such an anamorphic, and although the stretch is minimal, you will still get some of the anamorphic feel, albeit less than with a 2x anamorphic.

By the way, the price of the Scarlet has dramatically increased, or so i read on the REDuser forum.

Last that i know, it's increased to around 6000$ for the fixed one. have you heard otherwise?

about 1.33X budget options, all the footage i saw from those options just don't have the 'magic'.
you lose most of the magic.. (do you have a link of century optics nice video?)
this is not the case with isco 36 which looks perfect (= 3000$ :( )

Then again, the GH2's footage is so sharp, that shooting 2x anamorphic might not make it too soft. Imo the GH2's images have too much detail. So shooting anamorphic might be the answer :)

i also thought about this. still, you're probably talking about the 1.5x or 1.33x (or 2x on 4:3)...
2x stretching is too much even on GH2 16:9 mode, isn't it?
and don't forget that's it will always be a shame to lose the full wide space the anamorphic lens suppose to give you,
so with cropping the 3840 it is unusable anyway.
also, after testing, i noticed that every move or shake also turns double worse after stretching to 3480.
and finally - a think getting an extra sharp image from the GH2 can always give you more headroom for post work. you can always unsharp afterwards.

did i get something wrong? ;)

btw, forgive me but i am confused once again... maybe i'm an idiot.
if we shoot on 4:3 1440X1080, i suddenly don't understand the advantage:
isn't it like shooting 1920X1080 and then just cropping 480 sideways and starting from there??
from where does the sensor get extra resolution when shooting 4:3 ? did i miss something ?

The ideal 4:3 hack mode would be 1920x1440 frame for a nice 1920x720 2.67:1 image. The Arri d-21 has a mode like this.

Hi, Ryan, long time.. what's up?

yea that's what i tried to understand, what's the advantage of getting 1440X1080 4:3 at all.. ?
but if we do get a 1920X1440, how would we watch the image on the 16:9 lcd screen ?
is there even a possible chance for this kind of resolution 'cut' to be provided by the hack?
tried to ask Vitaliy but it seems he doesn't want to address this.

You would downsize the 1920x1440 to 1920x720 (which will look right when shooting with a 2x anamorphic). I believe the point Ryan wants to make is that you can shoot full HD resolution, whereas 1440x1080 will not give you full horizontal HD resolution.

A GH2 hack might be able to do this, we don't know yet. I know for certain the GH1 won't be able to process that.

I'm very curios of an explanation about the
Differences between on those specific hack
Options on gh2 vs gh1-
Why will it be possible only on gh2 ?

I wouldn't really expect a 4:3 hack to work properly on either camera.. Even when we were able to change frame sizes in MJPEG on the GH13, it was pretty soft and didn't seem to be adding real rez.

And yeah, a 1440x1080 mode won't really help quality, just save you a cropping step in post.

In my experience with 2x scope shooting, It's best/easiest to get a nice sharp image by squishing to 540 vertically and cropping the sides and then later uprezzing to full HD if you need it.

At this point, there are exactly zero hack options on the GH2...

And unless you want to try my 30p MJPEG anamorphic patch on the GH1, GF1, or G2, your post-production anamorphic workflow is simple:

Either double the width, or halve the height.

What resolution did you shoot your film at? Are the Lomo anamorphic lenses 2x scope?
yep, they're 2x. We shot at 1080/24p. And we'll finish the edit at either 1440x540 or 1296x540 depending on which aspect we decide we like most. (liking 2.67:1 so far and that's what we framed for on set)
Then uprez to 1920x1080 with letterboxing if we need to.

Have you had the chance yet to screen your film through a HD projector? If so, how does the 1440x540 hold up?

is it THAT grim ? it can be safely said that if any hack will be possible we're looking at at least 1/2 a year ? :(
LOL, you won't give up hope, will you? However, I'm not saying the prospects are negative, only that the results so far equal zero.
