24 mixed with 30p

Okay, so i'm going to be working on a project shot mainly in 30p. But there will also be some 24 fps footage mixed in. From my understanding i would edit in a 30p timeline right? If so how would i go about mixing 24p or 24pa footage in with the with 30p footage and still get it to play in real time. I would prefer to use 24pa but if thats not possible 24p will do.

Well, 24pa is going to be the toughest for you. 24p and 30p can both be edited on a 29.97 time line... but you lose progressive at that point as you'll be dealing with interlaced frames in the 24p footage.

24pa footage... hm... not really designed to be edited at 29.97. I guess you could remove the pull down and use Cinematools to telecine it, or add a pull down back in that will allow 29.97 editing. But then, again, you'll have some interlaced frames.

Is there a particular reason that you must mix footage like this? It seems that, since you are still undecided between 24p and 24pa, that it has not been shot yet... so why do you need 24p? Or better, what is your final output (DVD, Internet, broadcast) and why do you need 30p?

What would happen if you left or put pulldown on, and then de-interlaced it? That would give you 30p, but what would it look like, I wonder?

Thanks. Well i might be shooting a short ski documentary or something along those lines for a studio arts class. I would want to shoot the skiing in 30p but interviews and other such things in 24p. But like you mentioned and i've been finding out from more research there's really no way to get around the interlaced frames so i'll probably just end up shooting everything 30p i guess. thanks for the help.

You can edit 24pA material in a 60i timeline just like you can standard 24p. The only difference is that you might notice a slight bit more of a motion stutter than you would if you had shot 24p standard, simply because of the pulldown pattern. But you CAN edit 24pA on a 60i timeline; just don't remove the pulldown.

I recently filmed something for howcast in 30p, and accidentally filmed one of the scenes in 24p. It looks weird, between frames you'll see a "push". It's not horrible though.

at 1:11 is the scene where the dog and cat are on the big chair together. That was 24p.

And yeah some of the lighting and white balance looks like ****, I only had 10 minutes to film before my sister left for work and I just popped my DVX in auto mode.
