2009 Academy Award Nominations

Put me in The Hurt Locker camp for Best Picture. As stunning as Avatar was to sit and watch, The Hurt Locker was the one film that grabbed me from the first frame, stopped my heart and held my breath for the entire duration. (Yeah, I know, I'm lucky to be here at all after that).

From top to bottom, its what a great film is all about for me.

I think it's funny that you are all surprised that Avatar was nominated for best cinematography, meanwhile Harry Potter was also.

If Avatar wins best picture I will never watch the Academy Awards again.

Not exactly a murderer's row of films.

The Blind Side? For best picture? Huh?

It doesn't matter since Avatar will win for best 3d, ahem, I mean Best Picture.

My head is spinning. I am not surprised since 3 of the last 4 Best Picture winners have
been Crash, The Departed, and Slumdog Millionaire. I wonder if I would have liked those films more
if they had been in 3d?

Something that always piques my curiosity during awards season - why are people so invested in it?

Of course I understand that if you yourself, or a relative or friend or acquaintance or former college roommate is up for something, then it makes perfect sense to care. But what about it leads people who are basically unconnected to the whole affair to care so much about who wins, or doesn't?

Maybe it's like rooting for a sports team, which is something that I have never understood, either (unless of course a friend/relative/etc happens to actually be playing...)

Because we are tribal creatures and like to see our side win. It releases happy chemicals in the brain. In the absence of a real tribe, we adopt sports teams, favorite bands, celebs, tv shows, movies, anything to help us get our fix.

I'm also rooting for Hurt Locker. It's way past time for Kathryn B. to get the acknowledgment she deserves as a director.

If The Hurt Locker wins, I suspect that's why she gets it. I think the film SHOULD win but you know tons were pushing for Avatar. I think the only thing that could edge out the bias is the fact she IS overdue.

I want The Hurt Locker for Best Picture, Director, Sound, Editing, Cinematography (although Avatar might snag that as a nod to the 3D).

Regardless of what I want, I'll predict now that Avatar wins for Music, Cinematography, Director, & Visual FX.

I hope that's all...

Btw, as much as the film sucked am I the only one who thinks that Transformers 2 being left out of the VFX category was a complete crime?

Here's a quiz for you -- how much screen time of "Home Alone" was Macauley duking it out with the thieves? A) less than 10 minutes. Didn't seem like that, did it? Or another: At what point in "Alien" does the first alien actually show up? Might surprise you that the film is halfway over before the first alien arrives.

Barry, ugghh. Please don't ruin it for the rest of us.

I do hope District 9 gets an award, maybe two? Hollywood likes underdog stories. Avatar will get awards, you better belive it but The Hurt Locker won't go unoticed either.

Good times!

A friend in KC who made a micro budget movie on a couple Red Ones his post/mix sound man is up for an Oscar which is really cool!

I personally think that the biggest snub this year is for not nominating Roger Deakins for Best Cinematography for "A Serious Man". I thought that that was beautifully shot. Of course, I am a huge fan of his and think that he should have several Oscars under his belt by now. I am amazed that that the cinematography wing of the academy nominated "Avatar" for best cinematography. If it wins, it will be ground breaking, in that it would be the first winner of that award to have not been shot on film. With that, the only thing left, as a benchmark for the "Film is dead" crowd, would be the nomination to the ASC of an individual who has never shot film. I am not holding my breath for that.

Overdue for an Academy Award? Katheryn Bigelow? Which films are you referring to
that haven't been given their due?

On a side note, she sure is a young looking 59 years old.
