2009 Academy Award Nominations

I meant fully CG, painted or other technique that doesn't have any live action on it.

Thanks for the answer Michael!

I stopped looking for logic in this process a long time ago. It's all just diamond-dripping, ego-boosting, revenue-inflating spectacle to me.

...not that I'm saying that's all bad

Avatar got a nod for best cinematography. Why not best make-up?

It will probably win...but I suppose there is no law saying cinematography has to be stuff that is captured by a lens. The literal meaning is "writing with light", so I guess Avatar qualifies.

I guess I'm saying the same thing. With the motion capture technique, they are basically just putting digital costumes and make-up on the actors, but retaining as much of their actual performances as they can. I actually do wonder if they will go that route with the awards...

I think Avatar will win in just about every "technical" category in which it's nominated. (Not that it should, mind you, but it will.)

I pulling for Hurt Locker, especially for best editing and cinematography.

Why so many best pic noms this year?

I could easily knock 3-4 off that list.

It's a "ratings grab," basically. With numbers for Oscar telecasts down over the last several years, they see expanding that category as a way to make the show more "relevant" to everyday movie-goers.

Psyched that D9 got a best pic nom. It won't win, but glad it's getting recognition nonetheless.

It feels like I'm the only person who's paying Inglourious Basterds a lot of attention. D9 deserves a ton of recognition....

I guess I'm a sucker for hype, but I like the oscars, bigness and all.

I don't like to watch them in a 'work' mindset.

Does anyone else feel that WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE has been rather unjustly snubbed – not only by the American Academy, but also by BAFTA and the Globes?

Personally, I loved Eggers/Jonze’s script, and would have liked to have seen it receive a few nods, although I can understand why their interpretation didn’t appeal to everyone.

On the other hand, I truly think that Lance Acord ASC has been outright robbed of a nomination for Best Cinematography, as have Carter Burwell/Karen O in the score/song categories.
