17mm 1.8 Olympus New Lens

At first I balked at this lens since it's $499 which I think is steep vs. the much faster 1.7 20mm and 1.4 Panny 25mm (plus rather just use the $499 towards a nokton).

BUT

12mm Oly's autofocus on a steadicam was probably my favorite steadicam friendly lens. Now I'm curious if I could get similar results from the 17mm...not out yet so no tests, but curious if anyone else has the 17mm 1.8 on their radar for steadicam use.

The 20mm f/1.7 lens is NOT "much faster", it's a tiny bit faster and may proved to be the same speed when tested.

I own the Olympus 17mm f/2.8 lens, and plan on upgrading to this lens when it's finally out.
( I still don't understand why Olympus can't produce black versions of their lenses )

Agree. The silver look really kills me. I know it is a silly thing to worry about but I really think it is ugly. I also hate the fact that we have no image stabilization on Olympus lenses. Of course not a huge deal on wider lenses but the 45mm and up are a bit hard to use without support.

f1.7 and f1.8 are virtually the same. The 3mm wider view would be worth the extra price over the 20mm for those that find 20mm not wide enough. A 17mm m4/3 gives roughly a 35mm field of view for FF photography which I understand is pretty popular.

In the film days that focal length (35mm) was a favorite of photojournalists. The somewhat "wider" perspective over the "normal" 50mm allowed easier working with small groups, a "closer in" more intimate perspective for working with single or two person work. I used it a lot shooting for military newspapers when temporarily assigned to a base photo lab.

I have the Lumix 20mm and 14mm "pancakes" as well as the Pan/Leica DG Summilux 25mm f1.4. If I didn't have those I would be jumping on the Oly 17mm f1.8, it's going to be a very useful lens for a lot of folks.

Yep I'll keep an eye out mid Dec and see how it looks. By Much faster I'm also referring to the panny 25 and nokton btw.

I'm interested in this one. I have the Panasonic 25 1.4, and I love it. I've been thinking about the 20mm pancake as well but the 17mm is a better option since I already have the 25.
