16gig cards in 720p24pn mode

I have always heard that using the 16gig cards in 720pn 24p mode will double the space of the cards. This is obviously in DVCPRO-HD.
In this mode, I am using 16gig cards and each card is giving me 42 minutes of space. I'm afraid I've done something wrong, is this something I should be worried about? 42 minutes each seems like too much time.

Thanks!
Mike

You'll get 2.5x the amount of GB on the card in 720/24PN. If you change framerates within a few other shots on the same card (e.g., a few shots overcranked at 60fps), your space will change accordingly.

16GB @ 720/24PN = 40 minutes

I get 42 when using one 16 gig card. 41 when using 2 8 gig cards. Go figure :)

Anyways, just take the gig size of the card and multiply by 2.5 and you get the (rough) minutes of record time for 24pn.

Thanks I was just changing what I wrote.

720/24PN (24 frame rate or default, so it records audio)

1x4gig 10min
2x4gig 20min
1x8gig 20min
2x8gig 41min
1x16gig 42min
2x16gig 85min
4x16gig 170min (I think, It's been a few weeks since I've worked with a fully loaded HPX)

Also note that if you record 720/30PN and set the frame rate to 24, you'll get more time on a card when you don't have to record sound to the camera. You just have to change it back to 24p in post. With the cards getting bigger and bigger this will save more and more space on each card. Every second counts.

Yeah, 4 16's gives 170 minutes on an HPX500.

If you're counting minutes, keep in mind that the minutes you get are rounded down. If you have 59 seconds available recording time the display will read out "0 minutes". So when it says 41 minutes the actual time could be 41:00 or it could be 41:59 or any amount in between.

Yeah, even with 4 16gig cards and the 2 8 gigs I'm not sure if the client is going to want to risk going all the way to Paris and run out of space. I think there will be enough time to dump even if I leave the laptop in my bag closed dumping footage. I don't trust firestore either so thats out of the question.

That's genius. I could have used that about a dozen times already. I don't have my cam handy, how much time are we talking about adding?

Not much - I'd prefer the guide track any day! 4-channels of audio is about 3Mb/s; 24P video is 40Mb/s... so, at most, about a 7% difference.

Mikko - I didn't think your chart took audio into account...?

Dumping in the field...

Dumping in the field...

It always needs someone to do the dumping with some care and time...but despite that there is nothing wrong in doing it...!

Just make sure that you dont end up with just one copy of the footage, as you will obvieously delete the content from your P2 cards...!

I do remember how we started with six 4GB cards in April 2006, with a lot of interviews and sometimes rning around for shouting 24 hours a day...using a laptop and dumping the footage somewhere in the city (rome, minimum as crazy as Paris is...) was funky, but not really a problem...we did not loose one frame..i guess shooting on tape would have been a better chance to loose footage by dropouts....so good luck for the shooting..cycling with 4-6 cards should be very easy if somebody can donwload the footage more or less continiously..!
