GH2 14-140mm zoom better than I thought?

Ok, I know this probably isn't news to anyone else who has been using it, but I mostly kept my 14-140 that came with one of my cameras on a shelf to make room in my bag for zooms with constant aperture and fast primes.
This was after being relatively unimpressed with the light sensitivity and DOF of kit lenses on my other cameras, especially the 14-42 with its flickering iris as you zoom that came with my first GH2. So I didn't think much about this set of glass (and actually tried to sell it once).

I recently needed to travel light for a shoot and brought it along on a whim. I wanted to go deep and have some O.I.S., so I figured it would come in handy. Once it was on, I didn't have the opportunity to switch to another lens, so I was stuck with it for most of the shoot.

I'm currently editing the footage, and I just have to say- I think I underestimated this lens.

Images are sharp, even wide open indoors with natural light. There's even a healthy dose of DOF and the stabilizer just looks great. I even threw on the AF for kicks on shots I didn't think I'd use, and I'm honestly rather impressed with it for doc work! I feel like I have to share this with the forum in case anyone else dismissed this lens as I did. It's actually quite useful, and really surprised me! Even the flicker during zoom was less noticeable than the 14-42.

I'd sure love one of the new f/2.8 lumix zooms, but until I can afford it, this is pretty solid!

Honestly, if there wasn't any flicker at all when zooming, it'd be darned near perfect for doc work, especially outdoors.

I find the 14-140 has the best image stabilization of any lens/camera I've ever used.

I just wish the damn thing wasn't so slow. A constant 2.8 would be awesome for this lens!

Tty the 35-100 then

You know, I love the constant 2.8 on that one, but I don't love giving up the wide end or the price. Maybe when it comes down a bit, but you'd still need a fast wide and it looks like there are issues with the 12-35 2.8 currently (mysterious vibration in footage, iris steps during zoom, etc).

Still, the OIS on that is great from what I've seen and I'd be proud to have the 35-100 in my bag (psst, Panasonic, you listening?) ;)

When there's enough light to work at f5.6-8 anyway, there's really nothing better in m43 land. The close focus (~18" or so) isn't too shabby, either.
