120 fps hack

Hi guys, I know I've seen this before, but I have never needed to shoot 120 fps until now, so if anybody has the link please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

I know what he's talking about. Mark Harris did it if I remember properly. What he did was shoot 720/60 at a really high shutter (I think it was in excess of 120, probably 500?) and then use Twixtor or FCP to slow it down beyond the normal 50%.

I wish I could find the thread but I can't. He even posted an example.

The example looks like it's down, though.

Yeah, Kholi's right. I did it for my timefest entry. Shoot 60FPS with high shutter to avoid motion blur.

This is key, avoid motion blur at all costs. If you can do that, you can use AE TimeWarp to slow the footage down to 120, easy. I got it down as much as 200 FPS.

But avoid motion blur!!!! I know this is probably impossible in most shots, but that is the key. In RPDM, the shots I slowed down were chosen for their lack of motion blur. Though in that we actually stayed at about 60 most of the time, because in a 6 min film, 120FPS adds up real fast.

So my technique will only really work for you in controlled situations.

I remember the exterior sample you posted had a girl's hair waving. Even then it looked PRETTY damned convincing.

Yeah. that was a test from some existing 60FPS footage I had to see if I could do it. But even in that, there were parts where the hair got wonky because the frame interpolation could not work it out with the blur.

Why don't you offer to fly your RED to the guy, FedEx and give him real 120?
