The Screenwriting Process: Where to begin, and how to proceed.

Do whatever you can to make your current story as good as it can be. It's better to have one well developed story, than a couple half-baked ones. If you have an idea that you think could work in the script, put it in. If you are really a good writer, you will find more stories to tell when you...

Strange flashes at cuts on export "current settings" prores 422

We have tried exporting our project several times using "Current Settings." The sequence is ProRes 422, 1920X1080, 24fps (not 23.98). In certain scenes, but one particular scene is worse than others, we are seeing strange flashes before each cut after we export. Going through frame by frame we...

The Screenwriting Process: Where to begin, and how to proceed.

Ideas are overrated Ideas are overrated Ideas and premises are highly overrated, because you always need a script to back it up. A good writer will be able to take virtually any premise, and develop a compelling story out of it. Who cares if the idea is fantastic, or strange, or original, if...

Odd FCP Issue - clips showing up as 12 hours long

Our editor was working on the offline edit of our feature using a pair of G-RAID 1 TB firewire 800 drives. Almost all of the offline video we received was at least 1 or 2 frames out of sync with the audio so we had to re-sync everything in Final Cut. We could not replace the actual master files...

    Brand new to LA

Hey guys. I've been in Los Angeles since the 21st of June, living on the cheap in Westwood. I've got a couple questions: Any Syracuse fans out there? I just graduated in May. Does anybody know of any good writing groups? I'd love to have some people to read my stuff. Does anybody know of any...

Kevin & Amy (Thesis Project - Hotel Shoot - stock DVX100A)

Here's my project from my last and final semester. It's a little less than 25 minutes. I was the Cinematographer, as well as a couple other things such as the sound, which is a little rough. I have the original tapes, and I want to go back and re-work a lot of the project, but here it is as it...

Original sound design to clip from Alien

Here is an original sound design we made to a clip from the Director's cut of Alien for a Sound for Film class. It's on Youtube, because I don't know any other places to post clips online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4ulHyjD8Ec The video quality of the clip is not that great, as I wanted to...

Moving a project from Avid to FCP for color correction?

Probably sounds like a stupid move, because I don't think that FCPs color controls our as advanced as Avid, but we know how to use the CC in FCP and we don't have time to learn Avid. The project was cut in Avid, but I want to export it and bring it into FCP. What is the best way of doing that...

    Thesis Film

edit:*** All right. I've finally put the film online. It's a little less than 25 minutes. Probably the best place to see it is here, though you'll need some divx plugin: http://stage6.divx.com/user/agcohn/v.../Kevin-and-Amy You can also see it at Google video, but it will be very pixelated...

    Which camera should we use?

We're going to start shooting our thesis project toward the end of March, and we need to make a decision about which camera we are going to use: my personal DVX-100A or the school's HVR-Z1U. The catch with the Sony is that we have been told that we are not allowed to shoot HD. They do not want...

Which camera: DVX-100A or HVR-Z1U (no HD)?

Compressor can write H.264, but can't read it? WTH!

Compressor can write H.264 files, but it can't read them to compress to mpeg-2? I have an H.264 video clip that whenever I try compressing to mpeg-2 in Compressor it never works. It goes through the batch processor all right, but when I try to play the resulting mpeg-2 file it doesn't work. Am I...

The Screenwriting Process: Where to begin, and how to proceed.

My process has changed dramatically from one scriptto the next, but the best stories have always evolved out of my struggles with other ideas. I spend a long time thinking about a story, envisioning the characters and key plot points in my mind. Then I try and create a great logline from the...

Layers with motion for DVD Studio Pro?

Is it possible to create a composition in After Effects that DVD Studio Pro can read as a Layered Menu? I have discovered to my dismay that within DVD Studio Pro I cannot add FMV to the layered menus that I have created within Photoshop. Stupidly, the program is not capable of doing this. I...

    Optimal camera to subject distance?

One of the things I've noticed about amateur camera work as opposed to more professional looking cinematography is that some of the more amateur looking work contains a lot more close-ups in which the camera is placed very close to the subject. In my opinion this creates an exaggerated, and...

My DVDs look better on SDTV than my laptop?

I've filmed a number of rugby games this semester, but when I burn them to DVD they look heinously bad when played back on my laptop, but they look very sharp when watched on a normal TV. Why is that? I used standard settings (no 24p or anything).
