Moving a project from Avid to FCP for color correction?

Probably sounds like a stupid move, because I don't think that FCPs color controls our as advanced as Avid, but we know how to use the CC in FCP and we don't have time to learn Avid.

The project was cut in Avid, but I want to export it and bring it into FCP. What is the best way of doing that without degrading image quality. I should also mention that we need to move it to a different computer for FCP. Is it even possible to do without compressing the video again?

You won't degrade the quality at all. You're going to have to re-digitize your locked cut. Avid uses propritary files for its media. Its not just a giant set of Quicktime files that you can drag and drop over to FCP. So you're going to need to take an XML from Avid (hopefully Avid supports exporting XML) to FCP and then re-digitize. At that point you can use an uncompressed codec or a native codec (DV25, DV50, DV100, etc) and you'll preserve your video quality because it will be basically like you had edited it in FCP to start with anyway.

Oh also, you might want to try and check out Avid2FCP. Meant for making a Avid to FCP transition, so perhaps someone involved there may be able to assist with some tips for your current situation. Good luck.

cheers.

What format is it and what version of Avid. Avid has really good color correction tools as well and they are no harder than FCP's to use.

I'm sure that Avid would work fine if we had more time to experiment with it, but we only have access to Avid for 8 more hours tomorrow before we have to screen this thing on Friday, and we still have other editing / mixing that we have to do. I have a powerbook with FCP that I can do the color on, and not be limited by the hours of the school's edit suites.
