it's possible that I'm being too hard on 8-bit 4:2:0.
I can understand roxics viewpoint. For years we worked with DVC-Pro 25 which was a 25Mbps 411 format. Again years of production with DVCam, which was really the start of the 25Mbps 420 formats delivered good looking content. And we had awesome images coming out of HDCam in the late '90s which was a real oddball format. 8-bit DCT 3:1:1 color space with rectangular pixels with a resolution of 1440 x 1080. And all at a measly 144Mbps. A massive amount of great material has been shot on all manner of formats which today would get sneered at.
Years back this question of 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2, 8-bit vs 10-it was being asked. This following, now ageing video if you want to take the time to watch it was really quite a good look at AVCHD 420 vs Prores 422. Apart from a mistake where he states at the beginning of the video that Prores 422 was 8-bit, I think it was a pretty balanced look at how even today a now lowly considered 420 format can still stand up to deliver a decent quality production. That's the crux of the matter. A well-produced 420 8-bit production will murder a crappy 444 12-bit production.
