Cinema EOS Announcement on 19th Jan - EOS R5C

I’m glad that I have someone who explains my work.

im just reporting fact - people usually wobble if asked to hold a pose longer than 1:25 of a second

this fact makes being able to keep the sensor still for 1/8 or so is not relevant to me or really anyone who does conventional corporate portraits

many other use cases exist in stills for sure :)

Im not trying to 'argue'.. or be insulting although me 'not doing' stills a bit inflamatory :)

In Canon's presentation DR is quoted as 14 stops.

Let's see how that holds up. The only thing that interests me with that statement (it isn't the actual number), is that it might signify that the video actually is cleaner than the R5. Time will tell.

If the Cine EOS division rates the C500mkII at
15+, but gets closer to a 13+ usable DR,

then it more likely stands to reason that the R5C rated at

14stops = 12+ usable

There is no single God for filming. Every camera has and would have some issues. We need to choose the one based on our major requirements. Personally I have made up my mind to buy the R5C. B&H says March end. Waiting for the Canon Gods to let me know the availability.

I feel 4.5k USD price is good. The USB battery backup for shooting 8K50/60p is a slight inconvenience which I am ready to bear due to the small footprint of the R5C. Will also keep ready a P tap.

Cost wise easiest way to do a 2 camera 8K setup for small budget films if someone wants.

IBIS would have been great. Will have to see how this electronic stabilization works with RF lenses.

This camera.

Honestly its less crap than my r6 - it may house some excellent electronics and sensor ness and codecs..

but

the top audio box is (as ever) an embarrasment
the flippy screen would last 15 seconds in a journalistic situation
did someone mention mini hdmi.. FFS
the battereies are a liability

and it switches off for an hour when you go from video to stills.. shot loser in the extreme.

its not a satisfying professional tool - its just an r6 but less cr_ap

im not feeling my C200 took a hit

Just saw the BH announcement, funny how $4,400 for full sized HDMI and fans…

…is much more appealing than $4,499.00 and micro hdmi and no IBIS for fans

Like you really have to love the Canon eco system to want the camera, but by itself it doesn’t nudge the needle. Again giving more support to DLD’s thoughts.

Canon is amazing with the razor’s edge of product segmenting. never too much or too little.

they have mastered the fine art of product teiring.

I’m actually not mad, it is so good.

Latitude tests (the whole video might be worth a watch for those interested):

EDIT: The video is supposed to start at 31:50, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Anyway, it has good timestamps.

Spec-wise Canon has knocked it out of the box with this one. No XLR - or even mini XLR, though? Listed as 14 stops of DR. I wonder if Canon is finally being realistic here or is CineD going to measure it at 11.5 or something...?

At first looked really interesting for me. Battery is no problem as I want to shoot for several hours at a time. Then the real downside for me. Record time on a card for 8K. I would be happy with h265 8K 60P but for this it is only 30P. Has the processor hit a limit in encoding to mp4 or is this marketing.

XLR is provided by the Tascam A-XLR2d-C.

The dynamic range will be the same as the R5, it's the same sensor. I reckon it's around 13 stops. Noticeably less than my C500MKII but plenty for the price point.

Timecode-in and the new video menu are great new features.

Yes, given that the R5 is already extracting maximum DR on the video side.

This is not a given, in my opinion, if you have one camera with active cooling and one without. We often see increased noise as sensor temperatures rise.

The CVP video I linked to above talked a bit about the dual ISO nature of the R5C. I have not followed the R5's capabilities at all, but from the video I got the feeling that the R5 didn't have dual ISO at launch? But he then goes on to say that the R5 has gotten a few updates and when he tested the behaviour of the updated R5 compared to the R5C, they both behaved similarly—showing dual ISO behaviour.

I'm not sure when CineD did their tests of the R5, but if they DO test the R5C, if would be interesting to have them retest the R5 with the newest firmware. It needn't be the whole test suite, just a quick check to see if anything has changed.

This is true in practice, but I hope that sensor temperature didn't impact the test measurements because I hope that CineD et al weren't doing extensive recording and tested the camera at a relatively cool temperature. If they did, then the numbers should be the same on the cooled camera. But to be sure, you could end up with less noisy footage after a long day of rolling

Possible that they'll do this, but I don't remember them ever re-testing for new firmware except for the release of RAW recording (typically external RAW recording)

The dual native ISO is odd. That has never really been Canon’s MO. Their log modes have “native” iso and then maintains the gamma curve throughout the rest of the expanded ISO range. Is the R5C not going to work that way?

I saw that rumored pricing a while back but haven't seen it repeated lately in the list of rumored specs. The historical comparable is the 1DC being released at $15k in Dec 2012 after the 1DX was released at $6800 in March 2012

Annie Whooooo .... and this isn't just going to be a mere B&H Top Seller, it's gong into a category of the Other Brands Shaming.

OK, so it isn't perfect. But it is the best buy.

rub it in, DLD. I already owned up to it

if it's sub-$5k then it seems to me that it upsets the apple cart in terms of what you should expect from a mirrorless camera at $4k.

that being said, it doesn't have IBIS. and the a7siii/fx3 probably has a 2-stop advantage in high ISO performance

Fair points.

I think the dual ISO is engineering voodoo. All I care about is the lack of noise at high ISO. My R5 constantly amazes me in low light and the AF is incredible.

I'm old enough to remember when people were speculating this camera would be $7,500:-)

This price point is too good to walk past. So after much debate this afternoon I put my order in.

Anyone else?

I'm going to preorder it when orders open up here, but I'm going to rent a R3 and make a final call in a week or so.

I might rent an a1, too.
