GH5 How interested are you in a GH6 anymore?

I would say you should see them right now but I think you might be too old. Too old to begin the training.

That's another line from Empire Strikes Back. How many star wars references have you missed in your lifetime, one wonders? I will quote another star wars line every hour on the hour until my demands are met.

What did you even do with the family guy star wars take off? You poor soul

ha, I never knew you were quoting SW on this forum if you ever did.

I watched FG religiously in the beginning (which didn't have SW) and then kind of fell off here and there.

I don't remember much about the SW ones if I saw them in their entirety but I do remember one part very much so and it's the scene below. When PG says 'eazzzyy' when the ship swings was always really funny to me when I first saw it (it's at the end at 3:09).

Seasons 1-6 were really the true masterpieces and some of the greatest writing ever.

Actually that Blue Harvest clip was from Season 6, so the first one came pretty early...but yeah, that's one part I remember.

Seriously though, A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back are timeless classics. Mastercourses in 3-act structure, character and plot development, world-building, adventure films. Return of the Jedi (the one where you saw them flying through the forest) is worth seeing too if only just to cap off the trilogy. You can probably ignore every other star wars movie or show ever made. I hear that Rogue One is pretty good but i haven't seen it yet. But I would watch the original trilogy asap if I were you

Maybe...

And I had to look it up but I saw that movie I think that same year and definitely do not remember anything about it.

Classic baseball movie. why the angels help them cheat all thr way to the playoffs but won't help them cheat in the final game is beyond me

but yeah his dad promises to reenter his life if the angels win the pennant. But he doesn't keep his promise even after they do

Apropos of our discussion of retro trends and the appeal of physical commodities -

sonyalpharumors.com claims that fuji has rapidly overtaken sony as the #2 camera brand in Japan on the strength of its modern-day Polaroid-esque Instant cameras. Basically a digital camera with Instagram style effects that prints on film

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...ilfujifilm_16745183_instax_mini_evo_instant.h tml

BCNranking reports that Fujifilm topped Sony’s camera market share and now stands on second place in the ranking behind Canon. You cans ee on the graph that Fuji made a stunning jump. But the merit doesn’t go to any digital mirrorless camera, it is the new INstanx mini EVO that is selling like hotcakes

Proof of the enduring appeal of Polaroids. I see things like this available at weddings for guests to take selfies and paste them in a scrapbook. Also proof of the pendulum of fashion swinging...now digital...now physical. (Now shallow depth of field...maybe deep focus again at some point like citizen Kane. Would have had an easier time pulling that off with m43...)

also, norbro - just watch the opening scene of the original star wars for me. If you don't want to see more, I'll accept it. But it's gotta be at least as good as lethal weapon 3. Maybe even lethal weapon 2.

The Japanese photo-video market is very different from the North American. Olympus/OMD has had a larger presence there as well. And Instant cameras have been a big hit for several years too.

PS Apple has a larger share of the smartphone market in Japan vs. the US. I figure this is due to the fact that the Japanese own smartphone manufacturing is fairly insignificant (Sony mostly, with Panasonic doing business in other Asian regions) and the Japanese generally prefer the American product over the Korean and the Chinese.

Yes but parts shortages plague everyone. And China has a zero covid policy which probably has made it difficult to keep operations humming. Supply chain

with filmic pro you can lock the shutter at 1/48 and with a ND it looks good. You can adjust aperture too. You should try it.
No one is forcing you. It is one option of many

I use Filmic Pro all the time. You are correct you can lock in the shutter and thats spectacular but then the only option to adjust exposure is with ND filters. You pretty much need a variable ND filter in order to quickly compensate for lighting differences like shadows and clouds.

There is absolutely no aperture control in Filmic pro. You are thinking of just exposure control. Exposure can be adjusted via ISO, Aperture, Shutter and ND filtering. The lens is what controls aperture on a camera and those tiny lenses have no aperture at all. When you adjust exposure on a iPhone its strictly using shutter speed for bright scenes and ISO for darker scenes. Aperture are the blades that physically move to limit ho much light hits the sensor.

Variable ND filtering is a nice option but thats also a 100% manual operation and its an add on and not a lot of people are creating good ND filters for the iPhone. It typically requires some kind of a custom case and some solutions do not even cover every lens. So switching between the three lenses on the iPhone requires moving the ND filter. The iPhone also starts to get a lot larger and cumbersome when you add all of that. Plus like I mentioned its a 100% manual operation and you cannot use any kind of auto exposure at all. You will have to ride that ND filter constantly as the light changes or let the camera still adjust the shutter speed to compensate. Very far from an optimal solution for a camera where the processing is supposed to do everything for you. Plus that does not solve what happens for every user out there that doesn't know about ND filters or wants to invest in ND filters that will likely not work with the next iPhone release.

I have experimented extensively with using an iPhone as a viable option in a production with other cameras. I'm not against using them at all. This is a massive flaw to smartphones currently and it needs to be solved before they add any other whizzbang features. I don't mind having yet another 4k camera source to use as needed. Why would I mind that? I just want my tools to provide basic options for using them properly. Currently smart phones do not.

Now if one can create a very well structured lighting setup to create just the right lighting conditions they can be great cameras. If one has the crew to do that however why bother with a phone camera? So many better options out there for that kind of production. Thats why I find it odd that Apple is promoting the new iPhone for film production and creative DOF control. You and I both know they setup that lighting very carefully to make the camera work optimally. 99.9% of iPhone users will never do that and their videos will be seriously flawed.

I don't make excuses for it because I want them to fix it. If we all just roll over and accept it Apple will never address it. Film makers complained about the lack of DOF control and Apple knew they would never take it seriously if they didn't come up with a solution. Now we need to demand they come up with an aperture solution.

My 12 can zoom.
The same as a $100 Point and shoot? Come on man! Now you are being bias.
I might get the gh6 but will keep using the iPhone

There are different types of zoom. Optical, digital and switching between lenses. The iPhone can do smooth gradual digital zoom and it is great to switch between the three optical focal lengths for a sudden quit zoom. As far as I know each lens does not have its own smooth optical zoom. I think the phone can use a combination of digital zoom and switching to the other cameras as it gets to that focal range to limit how much each lens uses digital zoom. That can give a bit better results for a digital zoom but its still a digital zoom.

The three lenses however is a very clever approach to switching FOV. On a traditional camera its a manual approach and it takes time. On the iPhone its instant which most of the time is all we really wanted from a zoom lens. DSLRs typically do not have a power zoom and most of us have on past that old school method of shooting video anyway. Its nice to be able to do it at times however if you don't want to miss the action and do not have multiple cameras.

As cool as the multiple lens approach is on the iPhone it also has its own set of flaws. Mainly the framing of each lens. Framing a subject with the telephoto likely means way too much headroom for the ultra wide angle lens. Thats why the Multicam iPhone apps have very limited usage because the framing is pretty bad overall. Cool to have the option but very far from professional or creatively interesting. Apple needs to add the ability to tilt all three cameras so we can reframe each for perfectly framed angles. Then it could be very useful as a 3 camera setup.

Thats not to say other will not find interesting creative uses but that it is a hack and not really equal to other more professional solutions. Everything Apple does is neat and really creative but at the end of the day its a hack and a fake solution. I do however love the ability to tap between the three camera angles while recording video seamlessly. That is pretty neat and kind of in camera editing in a way. One does still have too reframe each time however. Apple adding tilt to each lens and AI that figures out how you framed one angle and then tilt the lens to match the optimal angle for each lens would be awesome.

FWIW, Tony Northrup thinks GH-6 will be priced at $2,000. Tony says a lot of silly things but he does have connections to the manufacturers. And, looking at the photo-video market, $2,000 would be a reasonable price for the model with the currently known specs.

....for the model with the currently known specs.

Currently known is the operative phrase. There are people with far better connection than someone who once stated m43 was a dead format, and who are not using any information they might have for click bait.

https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-e...full-shutdown?

This is about Canon shutting down - at this moment, temporarily, but potentially permanently - its Chinese plant. Canon is citing difficult market conditions. And the kicker is that Canon is undisputed global leader with a 48% market share (as of last fall).

Looks like Canon was manufacturing compact cameras at that factory. probably the segment most impacted by smartphones
