Absolutely stunning. I thoroughly enjoyed how original this was. I found myself paying attention to many of the effects as well and was a little distracted from the story. It didn't pull me as much as I would have liked, but the ending was very well done and tied up all loose ends in my opinion.

Wow, when I first looked at the icon of the screen before opening I was like why is it in this size? opened it up and still thought the same. After watching.. love the different style of filming, the editing was cool and dramatic like, I like the music - really flowed to it. This was the more artsy kind of film, but I liked it.

No I do think when he was at work you could have at least gotten two real computer monitors.

But good film. I like liked it.

Very cool Tim...great job. Creative, different & unique. Felt more like a music video and I'm going to have to watch it again to get into the 'story'. I found myself caught-up in the great song and effects. The same thing happened to me when I first saw Robyn's video for "Handle Me" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4UHNhVSrEM).

Loved the cinematography/photography too. The one thing (and I really do mean the ONE thing) that bugged me?...the aspect ratio. I understand why you did it, but it distracted me from the piece.

Very out-of-the-box. When the black screen popped up I had no idea what to think. If it had just been the way you shot it, it might have come off as gimmicky but the quirky story held up as well. I was not a fan of the first fest short I saw from you, then the last was remarkably good...my number two in Twilight Fest. I like this one, not as well as your last, but it was still engaging.

Now, I'm going to have to see what you come up with next.

At times I wanted to say the effects were too much but overall and considering the surreal quality of your short I think they were fine. Good job.

BANG. Very nice indeed. You created a surreal world around a solid story that worked very well. Interesting on the aspect ratio - I knew what you were going for, but not sure on that point myself.

Loved the vfx used. Shower was very interesting. Top marks for edit. The bed scene wasnt quite on par with the rest, where you were able to enhance separation with DOF or the room depth as far as cinematography goes and a few lightsource shadows that were a bit off. But please take that as a proportionally small qualm.

Really liked it - high score for me.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments everyone! :dankk2::dankk2::dankk2:

It's great to be able to throw this thing up here without any explanation and receive unbiased feedback. This was intentional on my part, and 3 cheers to the dvxuser forum which made this possible and inspired me to make something yet again.:beer::beer:

I'm just about to sit down and watch all the entries now, and after that's done I will explain more about the making of this little movie. It wasn't shot in any typical way, and I'll probably never do it again, but it was an experiment that has taught me several valuable lessons.

I can't wait to see what everyone else has created.

Really enjoyed your approach on this one, very stylized; from the way you framed/comp'd to the way you exercised motion within a shot. You captured such a strong dream-like quality which made it easier to connect and understand your characters. Nice how so much detail and thought went into this piece. Excellent work.

This was so cool. I loved it. I think I would have loved it even more if the song didn't have lyrics though - they were totally distracting me from the story, but I don't feel like they really added anything that I wasn't getting from the pictures.

I would say that this experiment worked very well for you - cheers!

When I fired this up I thought something was wrong with my quicktime. Then when I saw that there wasn't anything wrong with it and this was purposeful my first reaction was to hate it. A moment after that I came to love it, what is awesome about it, is that it might be the first piece I've seen that shows off something that works better on the computer then on any other screen. Kind of like how Allan Moore says that Watchmen(the comic) was made to show off the things a comic can do that other mediums can't, I felt the same here. This would have played horribly on my tv but a sliver on my computer screen? Brilliant!

As for the content and execution itself? Very interesting, I'd love to know more about how you did it. Great job!

That was a very interesting, different, and creative short. Really bizarre/trippy world you have created here. Seems like an interesting concept for music video. As others have said, the effects were great. I loved the look of that shower scene. The music fit perfectly. I don't know what else to say right now, I'm at a loss for words.

Congrats on a very original short that definitely deserves another viewing!

i like it. Didn't fully get everything, but the effects and set design were enough to keep me entranced. Looked almost like a music video or something though rather than a narrative. What an insane aspect ratio! We've been going wider for years... why not go taller!! A progressive entry.

So creative. From the aspect ratio to the story to the editing and effects. Really a unique entry. You really threw caution to the wind.

The story confused me slightly, but I got the overall idea, which I think in an art piece like this is the key thing.

Excellent work!

you're an artist, tim. that was beautiful.

Thanks Zak! Watched yours a couple more times. You're the king of emotional moments in every frame.

Looks Great Tim! Proud to have been a part of it! Really impressed with how the portrait turned out!

I like that, calling it a Portrait. Thanks for all your help. Went through the BTS footage you shot and there's some funny stuff in there! I'll post something soon.

Thanks! After I saw the shower, I was tempted to just show the shower for 3 minutes! Check the first page soon for details

Appreciate the comments.:dankk2: I think of it as a music video, yes. The aspect ratio was an experiment I've been wanting to do for years. A photographer friend of mine once asked why movies are never shot that way, and it got me thinking. Had to wait for the right project to try it, when this one came along. It has a few drawbacks technically... but it was interesting to shoot that way. The story is very open-ended. most of my versions revolve around some kind of purgatory/limbo thing.

So creative. From the aspect ratio to the story to the editing and effects. Really a unique entry. You really threw caution to the wind.

Thanks Jason. I was prepared for a flop, and figured this would be the best place to experiment a little and see what happens. I'm glad you see it as an art piece. Really liked your entry too, which was arty as well!

You know, someone said that this was the perfect venue for this, as opposed to in theaters, because of the aspect ratio.

But I think this could also totally rock as an exhibit in a museum or art gallery. I could see a flat screen tv mounted sideways to show this film on a continual loop.

Surprising, unusual, different.

But in my book, it would be better without 80% of the effects.
I dig the thing with the shower thou.

Frank

Thanks. without the effects, the movie would only be about 30 seconds long. :) I'll post the process soon and it might sway you a little.

wow. really cool!
Thanks for stopping by and watching!

Well you certainly win my award for most creative. That was damned interesting. I like it.

Sweet! What do I win? :) thank you.

Very creative, that's for sure. Interesting aspect ratio. :)

The effects seemed to distract from the story though. At least I caught myself paying more attention to them as they really stood out.

Interesting film though. Alex gets around this Fest. :)

MAH

You'll have to elaborate about the distraction, because there are many different effects going on. (I even erased the bathroom door in a couple shots. What a pain!)

At first i thought there was something wrong with my quicktime but when i pressed play i was pleasantly surprised :D i liked the creativity and that kept me watching but the story didn't really pull me in though.

Ha ha! I wondered about that! Sorry the story didn't get you.

Loved your music! Aspect ratio really threw me for a sec, nice.

I've been wanting to use this song ever since I heard it. Thanks

wow... like others said... i thought my quick time acts up on me when I see the leader was playing vertically :-)

Beautiful shot and I really like the VFX when he moves... the water in the shower looks awesome... how did you do that? the whole thing looks like a whole bunch of pictures and with little of movements! It looks more like a music video than a film but I love it!

You got it! Details on the first page to come soon.

Go Kevin Chap. Champ Exists...and he listens to Champ.

Especially in the shower. :)

This was so creative and original. I loved it.

The look which was so unique and totally drew me in and it fit perfectly with Alex's story, which I found equally compelling. It all had this wonderful dream like quality. I especially loved the music.

I don' think I saw this mentioned yet, but I'm dying to know how this was shot. Also, whose idea was it to play with the aspect ratio - it was brilliant.

In any case, I thought this was all very well done.

You saw exactly what we were going for. I think the story is there but pretty hidden. Thanks for your comments. Details about the technique on the first page very soon.

You never fail to disappoint. Totally bizarre, right up my alley. It looked fantastic and totally had me from the second I saw the aspect ratio. Great effing job.

Wow, thanks man. Great job yourself. I seem to gravitate towards the weird stuff.

That's a great idea. I'm going to pursue that. :dankk2:

Just when everyone has upgraded to widescree tv's I come out with a Tallscreen movie! ha! what an idiot. :)

Glad you liked it. I'd love to know which effects were distracting, because there were many.

Thanks. It was a weird way of shooting and like I was back to square one. I doubt I'll do it again. The computer monitors... the bain of my existence! We should've gotten real monitors. Time didn't allow it and we were trying to make them more surreal. Unfortunately my compositing skills are SUCK, so they wiggle a little and didn't have the same "glow" that we envisioned.

Thanks, Joe. After looking at the vertical frame for a couple weeks I see a 16:9 movie and think it's weird... all in the perspective I guess. Ha! was that a joke I made there?

Always love your reviews Blaine. Thanks for the support. I promise next time will be a narrative that you can sink your teeth into.

Dude... this was REALLY tight. Good work.. congrats... wished I coulda participated in this fest! Good luck!

yeah, I'd love to see more from you. Thanks for watching!

Thank you. I'm not sure about the reason behind the aspect ratio either, other than wanting to try it and experiment. :Drogar-Dum(DBG): I think I'll call it a Portrait.
The bed scene is one of my problem spots too. I should've used a wider lens and lit it more better. The problem was I had to guess where the camera was pointing, and it took 15 takes just to get what we have. Everything inside was shot in one day, and the white was intended to be blown out, erasing all those shadows, but we decided to go with the white as-is, making a lot more work for me!

Thanks Geoff. Yours is a masterpiece. That's exactly what we were going for, so I'm glad you saw it that way. Did anyone notice the paints? One of those little details that might change how you interpret the story. :)

This was so cool. I loved it. I think I would have loved it even more if the song didn't have lyrics though - they were totally distracting me from the story, but I don't feel like they really added anything that I wasn't getting from the pictures.

I would say that this experiment worked very well for you - cheers!

Thanks. I've always loved the song and tried to tell a related, but different story than it tells. I do think of it more as a music video. Without lyrics it might play more as a "movie" . Thanks for watching.
