Top 10 Impressions of Southern California

Charli

cool little "title"
Here are my impressions of Southern California and I lived in Northern California and the mentality is quite a bit different:

1. EVERYBODY is on their cellphones. You look left, you look right, and I mean everybody all the time are on their cellphones. Sure in Santa Cruz you'd see a few folks chatting away, but not like this. I mean everybody, including housekeepers are on their cellphones!

2. Aggressive behavior on road. I saw this back in '86, but boy, people yelling from their cars at pedestrians (we're tripping over that), honking, etc. Uptight people.

3. Friendly. I don't care what anybody says, just on our walk to and from the Promenade, people have said, "hello" or "good morning" or whatever. If we get lost, someone is always ready to help us. People ARE nice.

4. Weather. To DIE for. I'm going to get one glorious tan here.

5. Wealth. At the grocery store we see Mercedes, Lexus, Beemers, and those are SUV's. Santa Monica reminds me of North Dallas/Plano area.

6. Clean. Streets are clean, sidewalks are clean, the environment in Santa Monica from the Promenade area is very clean. We also walked back from Venice beach today and I was surprised how clean things were there as well.

7. Superb transit system. There's a bus coming and going every 5-10 minutes. You can get just about anywhere you want to and now that they have a subway system in the city (they didn't have it in '86), you can take the subway into LA and up to Universal Studios and Disneyland (plan on doing that soon). We took the #1 bus to Venice today and then just walked back, we're that close.

8. There is always something to do. If not in Santa Monica in Venice, in LA, in Hollywood, in Burbank. There is always something going on.

9. Health minded. A tremendous amount of people walking, young, old, in wheelchairs for God's sake. Whether in Santa Monica or Venice, you'll see them out early in the morning for a brisk walk.

10. Clean beaches. Santa Cruz's beaches were littered with algae. These beaches are raked and clean.

May I just say the view of the Ocean is freakin' unbelievable. Many want to move here because of the industry. I say move for the view, move for the weather, move because there is so much to do, and yes, there are apartments for almost every price range you can imagine.

My impression of Santa Monica, I think I've found myself a place I can finally call home.

Yes, thats what I always say about southern Cali. There is ALWAYS something going on. Man, that never got old. That part I miss.

Don't forget water. Everyone is drinking bottled water at ALL times. In fact, I don't know why people even drive cars. Everyone there should just cut to the chase and drive an Evian truck.

Yeah Santa Monica isn't so bad. It's not as sterile as Irvine Orange County when I lived there, but sterile enough.

Course, nothing beats good ol Georgia for me. Gotta go back sometime.

And YES, I think I yell at three people through my windshield DAILY to get off of the phone.

Hey Charli,

Yep - I agree! I love SoCal for most of the reasons you listed. There's there's the good and bad. I think the good outweighs the bad though.

Santa Monica:

Chez Jay's. Best bar in the Universe. Period.

(ask Jay to show you his archive video when he appeared on "What's My Line")

Hahahahahahaha. I currently live on the Far North Dallas/Plano city limits. I had spent much more time in Santa Monica on productions (I miss those days) before moving down here. I still think there's more wealth floating around SoCal -- last time I was there I counted three Bentley Continental GTs in a block and a half in Venice -- but this area is certainly no slouch. I once came out of the Indian place down the street to see, parked amongst all the other stripmall denizens -- a $300,000 Maybach.

Send your weather, please. I can't take the summer here. Which should be starting again in about eight minutes.

Charli,
How fast could you learn to write in Spanish??? Then how would you like to spend some time with www.2nd-unit.tv ??? No pay but a lot of experiance.
Regards,
Scott C.

Just dont go in the water, it seems they are talking about sewage leaks every month or so. We Had a sewage break at our house recently and the smell was just like Santa Monica Beach when it smells. kinda sick...

That's the funniest thing I've heard in years! Or rather, that's why we sent you to Santa Monica - you'll barely see people walking at all in the rest of SoCal.

Yeah, I don't mean to burst the bubble on this, but Santa Monica is consistently rated one of the most contaminated beaches in the country, good times and bad (that is, whether you smell it or not).... If you walk north, a block or two past Montana I think, you see one of the places where unclean sewage constantly flows into the ocean (generally lots of seagulls there picking who-knows-what out). Highly recommended not to swallow any water, and to scrub really thoroughly as soon as you can when you get out of it.

Its hard to beat all the things there is to do in Southern California, along with 12 MILLION of my closest friends.

I just love talking on my cell phone while I wait in line for the parking attendent to bring me my Farrari.

I'm not sure about there being more wealth here, just a whole lot more debt...

Aww man now i wanna go to CAli real bad.... I got Charli talking good out one ear, MArk Harris talking ggod out the other.... I mma haft amake a move too... lol

Azusa, Fontana ooo I wanna take you
Corona, La Mirada, come on pretty mama
El Segundo, Cerritos, baby why dont we go?
Commerce...

Off the Catalina key
Theres a place called Re-don-do
Thats where you wanna go to get away from it all

Bodies in the sand
Tropical drink melting in your hand
We'll be falling in love
To the rhythm of a steel drum band
Down in Re-don-do...

Azusa, Fontana ooo I wanna take you
Corona, La Mirada, come on pretty mama
El Segundo, Cerritos, baby why dont we go?

Ooo I wanna take you down to Re-don-do
Well get there fast
And then well take it slow
Thats where we wanna go
Way down to Re-don-do!

I'm sure the good folks in Compton, Long Beach and Inglewood would agree about your assesment that the cities are clean, people are friendly, and everyone drives around in mercedes and bentleys. But then again, every area has its ups and downs.

Key - lol

Ullan - I haven't been in the water, yet. The beach itself though, the sand is clean. Walking the beaches of Santa Cruz, the smell of algae, the bugs, the tremendous amount of palm tree debris, trust me, regardless of sewage, the sand itself is clean compared to what I saw everyday.

I'm actually on Montana Road, about a block or so from the water. I can see the water as I walk out of my apartment. The difference between this view and the view in Santa Cruz is that Santa Cruz was in the bay. We saw the penisula on the other side of the water. What was funny was people asking us if that was Tokyo on the other side. Okay, people were not that swift. That was Monterey and Carmel on the other side, not Tokyo.

Scott - sounds like a wonderful opportunity to work with you, but really, my Spanish, even with a dictonary is simple. Puedo hablar y escribir, pero mas como uno que esta todavia en la escuela. See what I mean? Send me something you want translated and I'll show you if I can do it or not. Send it to my hotmail addy: just.charli@hotmail.com

Today I'm off to the Santa Monica Pier, the mall (hooray) and apartment hunting.

Timmy - There are apartments all over LA (88 cities to choose from) in just about every price range you can imagine. Don't come here because you want to be part of the industry, come here for a change of pace, for the ocean, for a new beginning. Come here for the weather if nothing else. What's holding you back? I don't have a job, I'll have to get one. I'm not worried, I have two hands and a mind, Hell, I'll answer phones if I must. It is those who take risks who end up going the furtherest in life.

Jason - when I left Texas it was 90 degrees at 9am with 85% humidity. I FEEL your pain, but I loved Plano.

Well, except for the flat browness and self-basting in the summer, we have liked it down here so far. Now if we could find a good Indian place.

How long have you been gone? The place has changed dramatically in just the two years since we moved down.
