64GB P2 Card announcment

How much is the SxS card and what is it's capacity?

FWIW, I guarantee the prices on all these will drop even further. Wait till the 64gig is out a while.

SxS cards mirror P2 cards at the same capacity. However, 16GB of SxS is about 58 minutes of recording 1080p or 720p.

So at 1080p:

SxS = $849 per hour
KxS = ~$60 - $100 per hour
P2 = $2600 per hour

P2 is cheaper per hour (by a third or so) for 720p/24 but SxS and KxS are not.

I think sony might of had a press release today saying the cards are dropping in price or maybe it was a $200-$300 rebate for the sxs cards?

How much footage per hour per dollar for the SxS at 100 mbps?

Let's compare like factors.

1080p at 35 mbps does not equal 1080p at 100 mbps.

i found a solution for shooting with a low cost and ready to edit archive sistem.!!

The propose a simply modify for fs100.
You can remove the drive inside the fs100 and archive it. 354min DVCPRO hd!!
about 5,6 p2 64gb card....for 13000 usd.....you have to discharge and erase....
150 Euros for a drive with 354 min of Dvcprohd....you don't need to erase....you'll edit immediatly...no time lost to discharge it..
I take my way....great team Hdrevolutionstore!!! dvcprohd for all!!

Staking my shoot, budget, performance and career on a four pin FW connection? (on the HVX at least) No thanks. On some of our HVX200s, we occasionally have run them into the 1200 and 1400 decks for long shoots before the bigger P2 cards were available. On most of the cams, if you even barely jiggled the FW cable leading to the deck from the HVX, the signal would cut out.

Cool idea, perhaps more reliable on the HPX170 since it at least has a 6 pin FW connection?

If I would have used a FS out tornado chasing this spring I would have been in serious trouble. It would have been suicide.

The conditions were so bad I went through 4 duel adapters in 30 days then finaly had to give those up.

And I am not going to get into a pissing contest with you over this dumb crap. Someone asked for costs and I provided them. Simple as that.

It's neither "dump crap" or as "simple as that."

And pointing out the difference as I did isn't a "pissing contest."

720x480 DV isn't the same quality as 8 bit uncompressed.

Let's compare storage capacity, not acquisition codecs.

SxS 16 GB cards are roughly 6-8% less expensive than p2 cards. They storage exactly the same amount of data.

But the codec you elect facilitates more or less actual video footage.

It would seem that Sony and Panasonic sell the same storage capacity at roughly the same price.

I think this company sent me a pricing of $400 for the mod (that is after you already had the fs-100).

Not sure I want to have that much in that system, but I already have the fs100, so it would be cheaper than buying any card.

Sounds pretty cool - when is it aviable and how much do they charge?

No, let's not get into a pissing match. :)
I was inquiring about the price "per gig" of storage. But thanks for letting me know the per minute comparison as well. Good to know.

I would make the per gig comparison over per minute for the discussion here.
Personally...I'm not interested in Sony's codec. But that's just for me to decide.

Evidently it's not that far off per gig of storage. Interesting.

Yeah, a price drop is due in the cards, and the new 64GB is very pricey, I have 2 x 16GB cards. I would like to get another 2 x 32GB. but I can wait till the prices come down.

that said, I don't think the prices are that unreasonable. I mean we get to capture 100mbps 4:2:2 DVCProHD intraframe footage, a very pro format, that gives incredible results.

It's not fare to compare that to an inferior codec's media pricing, yes, they look good, work most of the time, but I'll bet ya they won't go as far in heavy post as DVCProHD would let you go.

The prices will come down. It's just gonna take a little longer.

I predict $900 for the 32GB, by June '09.

You can wait.

Use your 16's till then.

Don't you love your 16's? I do :)

That would be a fair price. I feel a bit duped with P2 media myself. I had expected
it to more closely track the price/capacity curve of other Flash media products (CF, etc.).
I realize there's a fixed overhead of controller circuitry; but assuming that's
held constant across cards, the price/capacity curve of the memory itself should
be at least half of its current price.

If P2 doesn't come down significantly by mid '09, I'm going to dump my P2 cameras and
go Scarlet. It just doesn't make financial sense.

Panasonic could have avoided a lot of this card pricing grief by firstly selling their cameras that included enough cards to fill whatever slots that particular camera has.
Build in a price that would make both the purchasers and Pana happy, and they would have users out there with all their slots full, not sitting about whining about the cost of the media.
If you can't afford it, then buy something else that suits your clients budget, or make your own P2 cards?.
Just consider our cost here in Australia of the new 64gig will currently be around $4,173 AUD each at tonites exchange rate, and that is increasing every day as our dollar falls.
I will not be buying any 64's, I'm settled at having 3 x 32gig and 2 x 8gig that fills my slots, and I have a Nnovia 80gig V-Mount HDD as a long form back up.

Jester.. those do seem fair indeed. If i could get 2x16 gig cards for a grand, coupled with what I have already.. then that wouldn't seem too out of line. I feel that their pricing is really shaped by what this media cost... and what the market was like.. back in 95 or 96. If it is indeed just 4 raided SD cards... how much are we paying for the casing and the P2 structure...

Has anybody actually used one of these 64's yet? I'm wondering if the new faster speed results in any noticeable performance enhancement in camera.

Obviously it will help with offloading times but maybe it also offers enhancements while shooting. Faster access to clips, faster deletion and formatting, that sort of thing... or is it like fast CF cards in DSLR's where you get faster offloading but the cameras themselves are sometimes unable to perform any faster in spite of the extra speed potential of the card...
