Great news for Canon users!

Thanks for the heads up on the pre-order! I know that this records simultaneously with tape and that the Z7 has a built in only to CF option, but is there a way to record only to CF on the A1?

Also, what specifically what bracket are you using to attach the unit to the A1 in your pictures?

Yeah you can record to only CF on the A1, I haven't shot a tape in over a month.

That bracket came with the Sony DR60 hard drive, I believe they send you the same one with the MRC1K.

Super lame that it cant do 720p.

Sorry but that doesn't make much sense, all these hard drive or memory cards can do is record whatever the camera shoots. The A1 has never shot 720p, no hdv cam except for jvc can shoot 720p so the recorder won't change that.

Just export 720p in post.

According to the manual on the sony website, it only records in 1080i streams.

Input signal:
HDV recording/playback
Video: MPEG-2TS
1080/60i, 30p, 24p
1080/50i, 25p

Is this just something they put because their cameras only record 1080i? Meaning if I am inputting a 720p image, thats what it'll record as? Seeing as how I have a JVC, I would like to keep everything progressive.

I've got a friend with a JVC if I get a chance to test it with it for you I will.

It comes with its own batteries right?

No it doesn't I already owned a sony L series battery. Off brands will work though so you can grab one cheap. Even the slim ones give the mcr1k a lot of battery life because the recorder has to do so little compared to a camera.

Just ordered mine from the Japanese site. Should be here on Sunday. So, if it doesn't come with any batteries whatsoever...it's not workable out of the box, correct? Does it come with any CF cards either?

In an earlier post, he said he's in Japan. I'm not familiar with the Japanese postal system or other parcel carriers in Japan, but perhaps they do Sunday delivery.

The place called Rakuten online ordering. I'm as surprised as you are that they deliver on Sunday...but Japan is full of surprises. Lol.

Also, I'm in the process of ordering accessories for this thing...was wondering...

Is there anyway to charge the battery while it's on the recording unit? If not, I'll have to buy an external charger cause I don't own any Sony cams.

I too am curious as to the largest compact flash card it can hold?

Popsiclestand you're right it doesn't come with a CF card, so you will need one and a battery. It has a DC in and can accept a AC-L00 charger for example but unfortunately the MRC1K won't charge the battery when connected to DC in, it will just choose to use DC to power it instead.

Here are some cheap chargers:

and a fancy sony double one:

CF card size wise I don't think there's a limit. The largest I've used is 16gb (72mins of hdv) but I've got a friend that tried his with a (32gb 144mins) and was successful. I think early next year there will be 64gb cards which will be dope.

For anyone wanting to know the exact process of making it work with the A1 here it is:

So record to card only this is my process:
- In the A1's menu so "System Setup ---> DVControl ON"
- Connect the firewire cable between the A1 and the MRC1K
- Turn on the MRC1K throw in your CF card (it won't let you get to the MRC1K's menu without a card in it) and go press the MENU button
- Now go "SETTING ----> CAMLINK SEL"
- Choose "SYNCHRO"
- Now on the A1 you should see a green box next to "DVCONTROL"
- Your now able to control the recording with the A1's record buttons and don't need to shoot tape at the same time

That's all there is to it. Once it's set once you don't need to do it again. Just connect the two and turn the MRC1K and you're ready to go.
I may to a little youtube vid about it or something.

Excellent posts, Ecking! I was under the impression that you had to run tape to use the A1 controls. Glad to hear that's not so.

Another quick question, when you stop and start the record, does the MRC1K record new clips? Like, how does it decide to break clips into separate files?
