I saw a 16gig P2 card today

Until P2 cards can record 2 hours non-stop, I'll stick with my FS-100 (beta) recording QuickTime files in Native mode...

how longs it gonna be before someone claims ( or actually succeeds ) to make a hack P2 card out of pcmcia cards? on the bay one could make A LOT of $.

is this even possible?

It's been discussed ad nauseam -- no, it's not possible, at least not for mere mortals.

Spec-Comm could maybe do it, in that they've expended the months of R&D to engineer their own P2-compatible card interface. But will they? And if they chose to, would they actually be able to make finished end product and sell it at a cheaper price than Panasonic can (or will)?

If anybody could do it, it'd be Spec-Comm. And if they were to do it, I'd like to see 'em offer a CheaP2 card that has a user-swappable SD card in it. Just give us the shell and an interface to the SD card or CF card, something like that. That'd be cheap and cool.

Did you shoot 1080?

Also, lugging around a laptop is the last thing I wanna do.

Then obviosuly you desire an HDV solution. I think some folks dont appreciate that Panasonic thew us all a bone here and gave us, CONSUMERS and low level pros, acess to PRO quality, 4:2:2 intra-frame HD, with one of the most flexible and versitile professionally minded cameras ever made.
Complaining that you cant record for an hour is pointless. IF its not for you, then buy a Canon. Its literally that simple. You cant do the VAri framerate, Native record, DVCpro50 SD, 720/1080 switchable HD without the DVCpro Format. Yes its expensive, but if you worked in a real commercial situation, offloading to Hard Drives makes for happy Clients, and a quick painless transtion of footage.

This system is FANTASTIC. No offense, but please dont complain when youre given the holy grail of work flow and acquisition quality and expect it to have 100% convienience. Then theres the Firestore, CinePorter, P2 Store Etc... the

OK i be quiet now. This is nothing personal Abbadon, i apologize if it comes off thsi way, but its just alot of people around here put down a workflow system without trying it first.

Spec-Comm can barely get the Cineporter out.... look at how delayed that product is, wasn't it supposed to be out Q2 2006?

I have no idea why Spec-Comm don't have the investment needed to get the Cineporter to market this year - seems that its likely to come out at NAB which would be too late as we'll have RED by then.

I'd say wait for RED and ditch the HVX as RED seem to be caring for what the end-user needs. Its refreshing to see a company not holding technology and advancement back for their own financial gain.

Sony, Panasonic & JVC have had market dominance for far too long.

The Cineporter was slated for Q4 release. It was said some months ago that the release has been pushed to possible early '07. Do you expect them to be able to come up with an idea, design, develop, and release a "working" product in 8 months? Most larger companies would take years to get to the point that Spec-comm is now with the cineporter. And the same thing with the RED camera. The difference is they don't have all the red tape to go through that these larger companies do. And, oh yeah. You probably wouldn't have heard about either of these products and been graced with the opportunity to have a hand and an opinion in the development of these products had this been a Sony, or some other. Most companies don't tell you about their products until close to their release.

Patience.

yea but red is not the same class as a HVX. its like a full two step higher. Thats like someone saying, oh i dont like honda Accords, im just gonna wait for the new S500 to come out. Yea tey are both sedans but they arent built for the same purpose. Dont just looka t the price ofthe red cmaera, its the workfow afterwards and the peripheral equipment that makes the difference. the Red needs good glass, Raided storage, and the ability ot have hardware that handles that workfow. And dont tell me about the nikon lenses, because they breathe. you need Cine leneses that are designed for moton picture. The Nikkors could be used togive a piece a special effect perhaps, but they shouldnt be the main lenses.

Sure the Camera body is $17,000, but triple that by the time you reach an end to end functional system.

Sorry I don't see how we are "Graced with the opportunity" as far as I see it these companies have more to gain for involving a forum to develop a product than the end-user. Its cheap feedback and the company gains financially in a major way.

I think its great to have communication with the developers but don't kid yourself that they are "gracing" us.

Its a business making money.

There are also many negatives that come with including the public in the process. Not the least of which is, everytime there is a delay, people freak out and act like it is something out of the ordinary. When in fact, delays happen all of the time, and I would go so far as to say that they are a normal part of product development. "We" just aren't usually privy to all of that stuff.

Or, in the case of RED, people think it is just a big publicity stunt.

It's a double-edged sword, and more often than not companies elect NOT to include the general public in the process. Those that do, usually benefit in the long run, as does the public.

Companies could just NOT spend any R&D money, NOT test and do QA, and NOT give us cool products at all.

....Funny,....you're bitching about a company and its inability to put out a product.....by comparing it to a company who hasn't put out a product..... priceless.

EVERYTHING takes time. And it always takes longer than anyone thinks it should. In software development we'd always aim for maybe June, and we'd always be scrambling in the first week of December to get the product out.

It's the way things go. People who make business decisions based on unreleased products are simply being foolish. Base your business decisions on what exists today, because there is simply no guarantee that companies will hit their targets -- especially with first products! Heck, look at Thomson Grass Valley -- they've been hawking the "Infinity" for, what, how many years now? Formal press release was about 15 months ago, and still no delivery date in sight. It happens. If Red is late, it doesn't signal the end of the world -- it happens. The CinePorter couldn't meet its first initial target date -- is anyone surprised? That kind of thing happens. There's no way to predict what unpredictable event will come about to delay things, we can only be sure that something probably will come along, and probably will delay things.

Here's what I don't get at all -- people are mad at Spec-Comm because they haven't released the CinePorter yet? Forgive me, but -- guys, get a clue. They're not "meanies" who are sitting on a stockpile of fully-functional CinePorters, and just holding them back from you! There's one reason, and one reason only, that it's not released yet -- it doesn't work yet. It's not "done" yet. And they're not going to release it until it's finished and functional and reliable.

Or do you really want to go through the first few months of FireStore Hell or CitiDisk Hell like those early adopters did?

I applaud Spec-Comm for taking their time, redesigning the product, and testing the daylights out of it to assure that it's absolutely rock-solid. There is one place where you should never compromise your standards, and that's on your recording format. Everything you do, all your sets and your actors and your crew and your script and everything, all boils down to what the camera records. I have ZERO tolerance for any "funny business" in the recording format. If Spec-Comm is taking extra time to "get it right", they should be commended.

I mean, heck, if you want a low-cost hard disk recorder that doesn't work, there's plenty of user reports about the (name not mentioned here), so heck, you could always just buy that one. But if you want one that works, why not wait for it to actually work? Why not give them the time they need to complete their development cycle?

it is about that time... the 8GB free card is about to be done with, which (imo) means only one thing:

_16GB comming out right after Jan 01
(ok, 3 things)
_8GB are going to drop not too far from the original 4GB cost
_4GB are going to make the HVX even more popular!

I mean, is just has to be, and Jan's name is the same as Jan as in January, ahhh.... it is all over, the signs are all over brother! :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

And the real sad news: Barry's book will no longer be handed out.
