profound pictures presents "Teacher's Pet"

Tech details on Camera Setup and Lighting?

Kholi,

This was shot on an XH-A1 with a Letus Extreme. It was my first shoot with the adapter, and, as you can see in some shots, I need some practice on focusing.:)

Our friend during the whole shoot was the huge natural key from the bank of windows down one wall. Fill, and additional direct light if needed, was supplied by flos and bouncing off foam core. We had a mix match of lights and were limited by our selection of daylight tubes, so that window bank saved the day. Still, it forced me to shoot wide open a lot out of necessity rather than aesthetics. Focusing is a ***** at F 1.8. ha ha

I was so excited to finally see this film and it did not disappoint. This is such a dark and twisted film; I love it.

Right from the opening sequence (which was fantastic) I was pulled in. The boy is wonderful. That look he gives the teacher is perfect.

Technically, I thought this was great. The look is fantastic, the sound is excellent (especially the climax), and the score is perfect. I am really impressed with this film.

Best of luck with it and thanks for mentioning MoviePoet in the credits. :)

Thank you for the kind words. Erez Henya gets all the credit for the wonderful score. He really outdid himself and made the film come to life.

Geoff gets the due praise for his sound work. He really pulled through on an area I'm sorely lacking.

Thanks to MoviePoet for the awesome script. Wenonah is the coolest!

I'm with Crhis. Really good short, Richie (team). Especially liked the opening sequence, quite cinematic!

If I had to point out something I wasn't too keen on: Teacher seemed a little stodgy. Kids were pretty decent.

What a twisted tale. LOL.

Thanks for the feedback Kholi. Working with actors is an ongoing learning process for me. The teacher is a friend of mine, and this was her first film. She probably needed better direction from me than " Let's do it again, just better..." ha ha

Great film. I didn't see that ending coming!!

Thank you. I'm glad the ending was a surprise.

You sir, are fantastic, that was incredible. Did not see that coming. I'm impressed. Great film and everything just looked like it went right. Hope you make it all the way to the finals.

Thanks so much. Like any production, lots of stuff went wrong. We just spent tons of time trying to make it look acceptable. I can't stop tinkering with it. Must...let...go....

Great flick. Really well executed.

Thanks for watching! I'm glad you liked it.

Dude I can't watch anymore for a little while. That messed with me. Fantastic child actors and that teacher was cute. But guinea Pigs? Holy Sh!t! You got me. You got me good. Great job. One of the best I have seen so far and I have watched over 20. Damn you. Did you have to show her chomping on the damn thing.?! lol My daughter came down stairs and saw that part. If you could have seen the look on her face. Well it was pretty much the same as mine.

you are a sick f@#K and I like it. I really admire the economy of the shots in this. It could almost sense the storyboard as I went through it. the candid shots of the kids, the lipstick, the clock an on and on. this was also smart use of the much maligned V.O. It buoyed the story rather than being put there for exposition purposes. One of my favorites so far. well done.

Thanks so much for the compliments and sorry for freaking you and your daughter out. ha ha

My four year old daughter helped me make the fake blood, and the guinea pig, Mindy, is my nephew's. So, she knew the whole thing was fake. Working with it so much, I've lost perspective of the graphic feast.

Thanks, man. I was worried about the VO being so heavy. In Wenonah's script, however, I think it carries the story instead of cheating it.

It definitely was storyboarded, but they were essentially thrown out once production started. My shot list came in much more handy.

Thanks for watching.

Very well done. Awesome job!

Thank you. I'm still trying to download all the .zip files so I can watch all your films, too. I can't wait.

Wow!! you all are too kind!! I never knew what it took to make a production come together. I would like to take a minute to let everyone here know how awesome it was to work with Erez Henya, he is a master at his art. If you need a score.. Erez is your man.

I dont need to tell you how talented Richie is...He has the "eye" and I am honored to work with him on this as well as other projects. Well, I must start my View Fest..

Cheers

This one is a blast and my only 10Star (so far).

Phantastic story, awesome cinematography, and a great score of Erez.

Damn good work Gentlemen, congratulations.

What the. . .?!!! HA-Ha!!! This one caught me totally by surprise. This was a very good film. Well shot and acted, also pretty darn creepy. Good job.

Odd concept... which I really liked!

Your lighting was nice and even. Mostly natural?

One of the few I felt prompted to comment on. Great production value with the classroom... twisted ending man... didn't really like it, kind of turned my stomach, which I suppose it was supposed to... acting was ok... seemed you ADR'd most of the dialog? If that's the case I felt some of the performance might have been lost there. Overall a solid short though, the score was good, script was good, pacing good, and cinematography good.

WARPED story! Beautifully shot...great lighting (natural). Good acting all around. The score worked perfect for this one. Maybe it was just me, but I felt you telegraphed the twist...or that there was going to be a twist. Yuck... glad I watched this AFTER dinner! LOL! (I bet she's quite the animal in bed...just watch the teeth.)

Really enjoyable film and will get a very good rating from me! Congratulations to cast & crew for a job well done.

Eewww.... gross. I liked it. The title is perfect and works on multiple levels. I knew there was something wrong with her, just couldn't place it until..... Yuck.

Really good kid-acting and VO especially.
Was some of the dialog ADR'd? I had a little problem there.

It looked great. Nice colors.
Great job!

Wow...great film. Loved the lighting and the colors. The kids were great actors...especially loved the expression on the main kid's face when he looked at the teacher while handing out papers. One can only imagine the outcome of their twisted relationship. Awesome job!

Brandon thanks for posting. I've been watching your films here over the years and respect your opinion. I had a feeling this wasn't going to be to yourt taste, so, thanks for looking through a filmmakers eye.

We did have to do a bit of ADR, which, as always, out of necessity. I wish we could have used more location sound, but it wasn't meant to be. You can't ever get that whole performance back, or have it perfectly match. We did the best we could. All this after watching the DVXUSER "Sound for Film and Television" dvd about ten times. Another lesson learned for the next film.

Thank you. I tried to hint at the twist without giving it away. I even toned down the clues from the original script. Maybe too many guinea pig shots?

Thank you. Yes, some ADR was done. We learned a hard lesson about location sound on this one. It's really a last resort. We've got a cut that warms up the whole film with a new CC scheme that make the colors pop even more. I'll post it after the fest on Vimeo.

Thank you. CJ is a great local actor with a huge resume. Having him made my life a lot easier. We had to recast that role at the last minute. I'm glad we did. Thanks for watching.

This was great.

I had already read the script and I liked it so I was interested on how you'd work with the material, and I thought you did a terrific job.

Very subtle, underplayed and I loved how the twilight element is a backstory to child obsession.

If i was nitpicking I'd say you got better performances out of your children than of the teacher. But this is minor. I thought you got the tone of this perfect. Very well directed.

Havent seen too many, but m fave I think so far.

This is an excellent short film.

As mentioned above, you did telegraph something was amiss, but it did keep me watching. Sometimes it works to your advantage. I kept thinking it would be something with the rodent, and the teacher was there as a red herring.

I really like the inuendo and play on that adolescent confusion. Really pulled it off without being overtly sexual.

Beautiful closing scene. Really drove home the infatuation Ben was feeling.

Maybe the only thing that it could have used was Ms. Storey bring a change of blouse. It's pretty clear blood was spattered, and I assume on her as well.

Liked the music very much. Lighting and framing was all done well - never felt static.

You certainly nailed the theme.

Well done. A must see for DVXers.
