HPX170 Lens Wobble Improved

Hi,

The Spec-Comm fix is not identical. And there isn't a new version, as any camera can be just like those coming off the production line is about 2 hours.

Best,

Jan

This is correct.

Video Shark,

Since the "Spec-Comm Fix" is so similar to what Panasonic is doing, Panasonic has considered it to have the same results, thereby "fixing" the wobble. We modeled the amount of movement the HVX200 has and went with that. Every camera's serial number that we perform the fix on goes back to Panasonic and gets filed as "Done" in their system for the wobble repair.

Once the Panasonic parts for this fix arrive at our office, we will be using those since they are being provided to us. For anyone who would like to have their fix done by us, you may. Just give us a call and we will work out the arrangements for shipping etc...

Thank for jumping in for me Jan. I have been away from my PC. Go Teamwork! :)

Thanks Jan, i just missed your message when you mentioned the J8 first. However I understand that for Europe it does not hold since J8 serie nr. in Europe has also wobble as I read a little later in this thread. So how can you see from the outside of the HPX, except of coarse by just testing the cam, that the fix has been applied? I ask because most of the times here in NL this kind of equipment is not on stock at the dealer so you have to place an order and testing after ariving means there is no way back anymore.

Hi Everyone,

Cees, I already mentioned that the serial numbers starting in J8 will have the fix in. Those with I8 may depending on whether Panasonic has fixed them. But as of today, no camera has been fixed.

Best,

Jan

Okay... I've been out of the country (Canada) for a bit and am just picking up this thread again. Last I heard was.... 'The wobble is supposed to be there, it's a shock mount etc, etc...".

I apologize but I'm too panicky at the moment to scan through 70 some odd pages to find out if my brand new HPX-170 still in the box from Spec-Comm is going to need to be sent back for a fix.

The Shipping to Canada was around $170 and change... do I have to pay for this? There and back?

Spec-Comm? Panasonic?.... anyone?

well i finally took the plunge and ordered from Spec-Comm. i am going to have them do the Panasonic warranty repair with Panny parts. just have to wait a week or so, but that is worth it to me.
thanks Spec-Comm!! been very helpful!

So the wobble is not supposed to be there, the shockmount is. As far as shipping is concerned, you need to take that up with Spec-Comm. Are you living in the US or are you in Canada.

Best,

Jan

I'm living in Canada. I called Spec-Comm and the nice woman over there wasn't sure how shipping from Canada was being handled. She seemed to be under the impression that shipping was only being covered from within the US. She said she was going to look into it for me. I'm honestly not looking forward to spending upwards of $500 (with exchange rate) for two way repair shipping on a brand new camera. Plus all the bouncing around it's going to go through. This is my first Panasonic camera and I'm on a tight budget here... so you can imagine that I'm not super happy at the moment. ... actually I kind of feel like barfing.

I sent an email on 10/20 and received the following response on 10/21:

PBTSC Service will email you shipping label for your camera to be shipped at our expense to have lens issue corrected. We'll email shipping label next week once all parts are received at our service locations.
Unit will be shipped back to you at our expense as well.

Email's fine and all, but I just call them up or walk in there. It's a more "human" experience that typically leads to better, faster results. :)

For instance . . .

Over the last two weeks and this morning, I've been in touch with Jim Fast over at the Panasonic west coast center in LA. Jim, I think, is the Managing Technician over there. And he has been great to deal with in the past. He was in New Jersey learning more about the HPX170 wobble issue and assured me that it will be handled asap. Because the camera and issue is so new, it is taking a little while to get everybody on the same page. The parts should arrive to Panasonic (west) by tomorrow. He said it should be a quick and easy fix.

So I brought my HPX170 over to Panasonic this morning. It was kinda funny because this was the first HPX170 they had ever seen! A group of tech guys came out and were all checking it out. They were asking me some questions about the camera and the issue. I went about explaining the problem, the NTSC/PAL upgrade and its FCC phase, the serial number decoding, etc. They were amazed at what I knew! LOL! They were like, "Are you SURE you don't work for Panasonic?!" LOL! We all had a good laugh.

None of this is to detract from the fine techs at Panasonic. Like I said, this is a brand new model camera with an issue never before seen. These guys were just trying to get a handle on it all. I have complete confidence that they will resolve the problem asap. After all, they said that my cam is the 1st in queue for the repair. I would recommend that others start contacting Panasonic to get theirs in too.

Not sure, but I think that the FCC needs to approve the Panasonic 50 and 59.94 modification. Probably something to do with because the 170 is a video recording device?

DC:

Is Jim over at the Panasonic place off of Cahuenga? Is that where I should take it to?
