HPX170 Lens Wobble Improved

Still distressed that Panasonic does not appear to be interested in paying for shipping to and from the place of repair.

I will return my camera for a full refund if I am not made whole.
I spent 5k on a working camera with $55.00 shipping already. I do not intend to eat more shipping.
I love panasonic.
I love this site.
I love Barry and Jan.

Paying shipping again to make this failed camera into a working model will make me feel like a sucker. I have sold a ton of these cameras for panasonic with my recommendations to my local film community and my referals to AVS.

Please panasonic-do not make me regret my enthusiasm.

I second this.

agreed.

I can't return my camera at this point either, I already have a nice little knick on the camera body

So I am really hoping that Panasonic can take care of all this.

Hi everyone, I have been reading DVXuser for the past couple months now as I debated between the HVX/HPX170 and the EX1. Despite reading this thread, I went ahead and got the HPX170 last week on a bit of a gamble. I have only had it for a few days, but here are my impressions:

-First off, this is a GREAT camera, no doubt about it. This is only a MINOR issue for me and I still love the 170 so far.

-If I grab the focus ring like I did on the DVX's and HVX's I've used, which is at about 9 and 3 o'clock, and twist quickly as if I was shooting run'n'gun, I notice the SLIGHTEST bit of play. Very small.

-If I grab it by the lens hood and flex it side to side like people are doing here, there is about 1mm of play either way.

-When I tweak the lens hood to the camera's right side, there is a very loud hollow click near the line/mic switches.

-When shooting handheld it is not apparent or not if lens wobble is a problem, due to the nature of the shooting style.

-Locked down on my 501HDV head and 351MVB legs, at full tele, there is a very noticable shift in the image if I grab the lens hood and tweak it side to side. At full tele, if I grab the focus ring like I normally would and rack focus quickly, there is a slight shift in the image, but at full tele I probably am shaking the camera a bit anyway. However, if I carefully twist the focus in a smooth rack, there is no apparent shift in the image.

Curious to see what Panasonic comes up with as a fix.

-Kyle
These are the same results that I've had (except for the loud hollow click) testing over and over.

Hi Luis,

Not all of the cameras have the problem. I have three in my custody that do not exhibit this behavior.

Sorry for any misunderstanding there - I was not by any means trying to say that 'all' cameras had the problem,
I only said that "many" have the problem. I suppose I could have said "some" instead.

Camera came from Spec-Comm today (Like one or two days early! I just happened to be awakened by the sun in time to catch it! LoL)

Same amount of wiggle on the 200A. Checked before I sent it out. Thanks to Andrew for having the crew pre-install the fix!

You're going to return your $5200, 1st Gen/1st Batch HPX170 camera because of a minimal one-way shipping charge not being covered by Panasonic? Wouldn't you have to pay to ship it back to your dealer anyway? Seems like a bit of an overreaction.

Guys, this is an awesome camera with a small problem that can and will be fixed by the manufacturer very soon, not to mention that Spec-Comm is offering a fix right now. It's not like the shock mount flaw is such an intregral part of the design that it can only be "fixed" by introducing a completely new camera model.

Yeah, it sucks that many of you are having this problem but you gotta play the hand that was dealt to you when you entered the game. Like anything in this unpredictable world: poop happens - it smells. But, IMHO, at least this particular "poop" will be cleaned up in a relatively fast and fair manner.

Although I don't necessarily disagree with you, one thing I am concerned with is how "relatively fast" this issue will be resolved.

I think we were initially told October 10th. Not certain on that.

I don't know if this is firmware, hardware, or what?

I'm not even certain if there exists an easily determinable test for it that factors out user error.

Apple supplies shipping both ways and a return box for warranty issues.

I like that policy, and that is a policy, not a warranty specification. In other words, nothing is spelled out in the warranty on this service. Apple just provides it.

It would be great if Panasonic did the same due to the fact that cam was just released.

We'll see.

Apple's products are generally purchased at a premium price so I'm not surprised that they do that. Panasonic tends to offer great "bang-for-the-buck" prices (comparitively).

But yes, I agree with you, it would be nice if Panasonic did the same. :) And I'm hoping that Panasonic moves as quickly as possible on a fix for the camera. But at the same time, I would rather they take the time to properly decide on what the best fix will be.

Still no official word from Panasonic?

(Can slice the tension with a knife at this point.)

If only someone could capture this on film...hmm.

We were going to purchase two HPX170's, but this really caused us to put that decision on hold. We are starting to have student interns so this certainly makes us a little nervous. I just want to limit camera downtime now and in the future.

I was so looking forward to getting these too.

The HVX200a's are heavier and require 82mm - 72mm step down rings.(which isn't that big of a deal) All in all, the HPX170's with their HD/SD - SDI output and additional onboard image analysis options, and wider lense angle seemed to be the better choice.

Geez..as an educator, this certainly makes me think twice.

I guess we got spoiled with the outstanding reliability and durability of our DVX100's over the years. 3 years now and not a single problem with either camera - and these things have been well used.

Obviously Panasonic takes pride in their products and would certainly not wish to create doubt or taint their reputations in the marketplace with their obviously loyal customers.

Given the nature of this issue, it seems to me they should follow the Apple and Epson Corp. service policies, and pay for shipping both ways for any and all affected cameras. The buyers should have gotten what they paid for initially...that's really the bottom line. Who's fault this is can and should be worked out at their next R&D meeting or whatever. But, it should not come out of the wallets of hard working and Panasonic loyal filmmakers.

I can tell you that we would've been majorly ticked if we had gotten two defective cameras and were told we had to pay to send them back to get them working properly.

*fingers crossed that Panasonic does the right thing here.*

Thanks,

Much ado about nothing. Call Andrew Hoffman at Spec Comm today, order your cameras and he will do the fix before they even ship to you.

Can't see how this issue even remotely affects prospective buyers at this point when Spec Comm already has a Panasonic endorsed, cost free and simple fix.

For those who already have camera in hand with the issue, it is an issue. For you, there should be no issue.

Grab it up from SpecComm. Mines came in and has only as much play as my 200A did. Movin' on to actual shootin' now. =P

Can someone tell me how to turn the EVF off when the LCD is opened? I swear the option was in the Display Menu on the HVX.

there is an EVF detail button right on the inside of the LCD.

That's the detail button. How do you turn the EVF off completely when the LCD is opened?

I really swear it was an option in the display menu before.

Jay - I sold the 200A. LoL.

I think we're still going to wait until Panasonic has an official statement and policy in place regarding the HPX170 issue. Hopefully not too long though.

I have the utmost confidence in all the people at Specialized, whom I bought our cam from, a previous HVX200, and several other items, and intend to buy from again.

Wonderful service and great to deal with.

But I also am awaiting an official, definitive statement from Panasonic on this issue.

I think many of us would welcome and appreciate the earliest update on it from the company.

Page 20 of the HPX170 manual says "Images are always displayed on the viewfinder."
