VISION02 The ultimate XHA1 Preset!

someday

Well-known member
The ultimate XHA1 preset.

EXPLANATION

The Trend:
When we use high end digital cameras, sporting more than 10bit, high res, no compression 4:4:4 color space, we want to shoot with few contrast, in order to correct it during the post production process.

The Exception:
With highly compressed HDV cameras featuring only 8 bit the trick above can't be done without affecting the quality drastically, because the camera only uses few of the 8 bits available to describe the image, obtaining banding and resulting in a heavily deteriored footage if color corrected.

The Solution
Creating a preset that uses the most bits possible, with REAL BLACKS AT 0 IRE, and that can be used without any CC

Here is it:

VISION02

This preset sports high contrast, 0 IRE blacks, less banding and better SN ratio.

There is no setting that produces the best video signal all times in any circumstances. To many parameters involved for doing that, that is why you can alter the settings.
1. To many people tried to build (and published) a setting, there are +30 settings available for download. Many of them claim to be the 'best' setting.

2. If you CC with the Mac and Color you have to go to ProRes, and you 'create' a 10 bit file, but even without that correcting HDV is possible with good result.

3. Good CC is worth a lot, sometimes there is a need to CC, sometimes it is desired.

BBC tested the XHA1 -and other cams- and found a setting that you can shoot in and later CC, that is controlling the red more. So this is preset number 32...

BBC (after trying to get a "filmlook")
'efforts were directed at getting a decent colorimetric performance from the camera. Assuming that a grading operation will be used in post-production, the settings attempt to give the colourist a reasonable exposure range, but this is inevitably well- short of what a film stock could be expected to deliver. '

All settings standard 0 but alter:

Knee middle
Black stretch
Sharpness 3
H dtl Freq 9

RG matrix - 6
RB matrix - 4
GR matrix 0
GB matrix 0
BR matrix +17
BG matrix +2

I saw your little mov, nice, but I definitely would want to CC (grade..) that , the pink shirt in shot 1 and shot 2 are completely different.

xray,
i expressively did different white balances.
actually, VISION02 is even better at CC because it uses more bits than average 7.5 IRE settings, and it has less banding and some less noise.

Good to hear that you can CC your vision02 setting (I thought so). One setting in your vision is a little problematic for me. You use the NR2 setting on HIGH. That is a spatial lowpass filter that can kill fine texture in the image. Sure it can kill the 'dancing' pixels too, but you do not always want that to happen during the recording, I like that option during the CC proces.

NR2 always high is a little to bitty for me. I like your little mov though.

Someday,I've just tried this out and from what I can see so far it looks fantastic. I'll shoot some more footage and post it on vimeo tomorrow.......

looks nice, but i would prefer somethign between this and True color. I find the footage is still too magenta in the skin tones. Film doesn't usually do this. ( depending on the white balance ) but still, it does not give the skin such a magenta'ish hue.

I just used a preset called reality and to me it gives the truest representation of colors and skin tones that I've used to date. Similiar to true colorrs just without the blue cast everone seems to talk about.

I like those presets. Maybe i simply should lower the setup to -9 to have real 0 IRE blacks, because i hate all that greish in the shadows.

Is there a link to the BBC article where this was discussed? I've love to read more about this.
