Record directly into laptop HD?

well thats pretty convenient if it is true, although i will need to shoot in PN mode so maybe its not too convenient in my case :(

thanks for the reply nonetheless!

Why do you need to shoot in PN mode? All it does is not record the redundant frames -- if they are recorded, they can be removed in post. Some specialized recording/monitoring programs have the ability to drop them on-the-fly, but the end result is the same, as is the quality.

This is what Barry Green replied to my variable frame rate question in another thread and is the reason why I am shooting in the PN mode, I need to overcrank:

'Yes, but let's clarify something else too: if you have it in 24pN mode, then what David described is correct -- it'll image at 26fps, record it into a 24fps stream, and your footage would come in at a very, very slight slow motion with no audio.

But if you were using 720/24P mode, then what gets recorded is a 60p data stream with 26 unique frames per second. Audio would be recorded, and the footage would play back in real time.

It makes a huge difference to the look of your footage as to whether you chose 720/24pN mode, or 720/24P mode.'

I shoot 24p over 60 and use the FRC in FCP to remove the redundant frames.

provides beautiful slow motion footage, and no need for pN.

ok, i have another question concerning all of this p and pn stuff: i will be overcranking a very long shot hand held without the possibility of using the live capture to a laptop. that is the reason for using the pN with the P2.
now my question is, is it better to just keep all my footage in the pN mode to keep the style of the shoot consistent? or can i use the P2 in PN mode, then switch over to the 24p mode and do a live capture on the 60p stream for the same project (short film) without noticing a difference in the style?

maybe i am being overly worried here, but i am new and do not really have a lot of time to do a long enough test to make sure so i figured why not keep everything in pN mode.

I have recorded from my HVX via firewire to my MacbookPro to a firewire800 bus powered drive, works fine except for the damn fan on my MacbookPro. That noise renders the solution unusable for interviews, the only reason I really needed it... for long record times.

Oh well.

Any "normal" system Hard disk, wich have to operate the software and record HD data at same time, will have problems in a given moment.

I do not consider (in a serious job) to rely in an HD that can fail in what I'm expecting (record without any problem).

In a experimentation level it may work, but when you have (as I have) to record 10 or 12 hours in a feature production that costs several thousands buks...

That'a my experience.

good luck.

you can override fan settings using smc fan control or iCyclone

I looked into those programs and felt it was a bad idea to turn the fans down or off for the length of time i needed for an interview. My MBP gets pretty hot. I am waiting for the 64GB card to come out and working it into the next budget.
