HPX500 is video - say it like it is

I don't think film will fade away anytime soon. However, in the end, it will be reserved for the multi-billion corporations in Hollywood who controls mainstream cinema. As for the average unknown Mr. Joe DPs down the street like the rest of us, HD and Ultra HD will forever be. Thank goodness there's HD for the rest of us.

I don't remember going to Wal-green to get a "film" photo print the past ten years and I don't foresee ever bother with shooting and printing film ever again. But then, that's just me. By all means, shoot your masterpiece with film if that's what you love and can afford.

My point was that at some point in the future HD video will be so advanced that there will be no reason at all to use film. I'm not saying this will be in the very near future, but you can't say "film will forever be better than HD video"

Sincerely thank you all for the honest replies, this was never meant to be film vs video thread...
My goal was to ruffle some feathers and have everyone post links to amazing footage shot with the HPX+adapter combo.

hit me!

Well we're not your monkeys go'l darn ya! Just look for the footage! sheesh! Check out Barry Greens entry into Hallofest! It's not hard to find...

Rather than trying to ruffle peoples feathers... my goodness!

now now lawriejaffa, lets not get our panties in a twist.

I've searched the forums very thoroughly for footage shot on an afforable production HPX relay setup, only found a vimeo link to a test clip of a statue by hunter.

I personally feel (like so many others) there is a need for a good relay adapter, Letus are working on it but with no fixed release date.
Again I personally feel without the adapter the HPX500 image is just a little videosh, not saying good or bad.

DVXuser is rare neighborhood bar where working professionals and first time amateurs share their thoughts and experiences amicably.
There are many folks in these forums who have the power to make a radical impact on the way we film and help us with tools to better our trade.

open minded discussions help bring about change...

seems to me like you have a different agenda

If you think slapping a 35mm adapter will make your footage look like film, you are greatly mistaken. There are far more other factors that you need in order to *mimic* the film look and feel.

Is it just me who thinks a good deal of footage shot on the hpx500 look so obviously video?
maybe its just that i like grain, one of the reasons i like the lens adapters (german and american) is because of the forced DOF fun you can have with it.
the other reason is that the xtra grain/shutter effect, maybe i just dont like super clean images.
maybe a relay lens/adapter will produce way more interesting images.dunno, will have to try it out soon.
please post ur replies, im curious to hear thoughts, comments and opinions.

No news there. Of course it's video-ish. Why wouldn't it be?

"Say it like it is"....? Sure thing: it's a video camera!

I don't understand why you expect the HPX to be something it's not, i.e, 35mm film camera or RED or whatever.

hey jared,
the deal is i can give you a list of work shot on the HVX200 with an adapter, which could pass as 16mm footage, a prime example being "shell" by michael fisher and nathan beaman.

I know don't expect HPX500 to substitute film but personally i would really like the motion in my clips to be film like and not glare like video.

I love the "flight of the conchords" but its not the look i can use for the work i do.

Hi,

You can set the 500 to give you images that look very film like. Not sure why every one is being so hard-nosed here, but if you have seen HVX200 images that have the look you are after, then indeed you can accomplish the same this with the 500, an have better dynamic range, better low-light and more resolution in the process.

Best,

Jan

+ DOF you can work with. No adapter, no tons of light, no "modular" extras to slap on the camera.

Even a Hasselblad full format is available as a 35MP digital camera today, because the only reason to shoot still photography on film is nostalgia...

Although this is true, the images produced still can have digital artifacts that you don't see with film. Also, the sensor is smaller than the 6cm film frame so you don't get as much dof and angular resolution. These days film is scanned to digital, and that too can result in digital artifacts that are not present in traditional prints.

I just don't get it, what's the point of making another discussion like this? Isn't something that's already been discussed?
The thread name is already quite ridiculous as it is (HPX500 is video - say it like it is) Of course its video!

Aside from some technical postings which have something to contribute, there really is no point!

However since the debate is on again, I will quote something straight out of ASC magazine July '08 issue: Wally Pfister, ASC on using IMAX 65mm and 35mm anamorphic cameras on Batman The Dark Knight: "It's ironic muses the cinematographer, because many film-makers are trying out digital cameras that actually capture less resolution and information, and we're going in the opposite direction, upping the ante by capturing images with unparalleled resolution and clarity.."

I love digital cinema and my HVX....but I would definitely choose film for dramatic work given the budget any day. There's so much more information there and now it's just so much better than anything digital with the technology on the film stocks...I think we all know this and there's absolutely no reason for us to be chasing the "film look" as if it is some kind of holy grail...If it happens naturally fine. But then again shouldn't we be more inclined to just create interesting stuff?

the hpx500 looks more like film than the hvx does. the hvx + a 35 adapter looks great but the hvx by itself looks a little too video imho. the expanded dynamic range and shallow dof of the hpx is way closer to film than the hvx.

take that and add good lighting and 95% of the population would say it's film...

Ok you film vs digital freaks.

Head on over here and try your luck. This is a prime example of how film and digital can look almost identical. It's all about how you shoot. IMO
