TimeFest FINALISTS & Screening & Round 2 Voting Info

Just a quick question... is the panel voting on the 6 minute version? Or the new 6:30 cut?
ALL judging is done on the original cut. The cutoff deadline for submissions is a hard deadline for all judging.

We know some folks have re-worked their films since the June deadline, and we figured that for the big screening party they might want to show their updated films. That's fine, but that's the only place they'll be seen, is at the screening event. The judges will see the original cuts, to keep it fair to everyone.

Sounds very fair. Thanks for the prompt reply!

Cheers,

A thought just crossed my mind...are we supposed to submit a higher quality version for the screening? I'm assuming (read: "hoping") you don't screen the 50mb uploaded version! :D

Thanks!

Daniel

Yes. Fat Monster will give exact format that they want, but you certainly would be encouraged to do that, yes.

The screening is for users, fans, family, etc., but it's also for some rather high-profile invited guests. We want your work seen by people who can take you to the next level. So, yeah, definitely give us the best high-quality master version you can (and, as Jason said, check with the Fat Monster guys for the exact format, etc).

You have a chance to re-cut your film a little for the screening party, add proper credits etc. It won't affect the judging outcome, but we want you to have a chance to put your best foot forward for those who will see your work.

Best of luck to all Finalists!

To those of you changing your votes:

You are rating individual films, not ranking them. You should also know that the system is currently ignoring changes to first round votes (even if it wasn't your impact would be almost none). Only legitimate 2nd round votes are being processed by the database.

In the extremely rare event that you have a pressing need to change one of your ratings from the first round, you should first send a pm to myself or Larry R, b/c in most circumstances there should be little need to change your rating on a film from the first round... at least little honest need.

Rate the films, and be honest.

Jason

This has been one hell of an awesome learning experience. Virtually my entire output consists of films for DVXFest. If it weren't for this site, it's very possible I would still be thinking about making a short movie instead of actually having finished one. So, in that spirit -- massive congratulations to everyone, and especially to the first-timers. And an equally massive "thank you" from the Ad Infinitum crew!

Wow! I am seriously humbled and surprised that we got into the Top 8!!! Woohoo!

I think it is cool that the films that made it were a good mix of not only the technology (HV20, DVX, HVX, HPX, etc.) but a good mix of styles as well as first time entrants (Survival, The Small Multiple, others?) and the regulars (RPDM, O2).

Congratulations to all and I am going to see if there is anyway possible to get out to L.A. for the party! (Maybe Rogan, Gary and I can all pitch in and buy a covered wagon and head out West).

A huge thanks to the moderators and everyone else involved in putting this together! Great work!

Daniel

I also like your film Daniel. The VFX were interesting. So was the sound, Brad did it! Anything he touches will make you feel comfortable and right at home.

Way Big Congrats! To All of the Film Makers).....and Big Respect... to all the First Timers!)....You are the Future of this Medium.....With Mad Skillz...Do What You Do......and Love It!!!!!!!)

You guys have set the bar high, and given everyone inspiration, and a clear standard of artistic and technical craftsmanship we can aspire to.

Hats off

Every film had its golden nugget. Lots to be proud of here. Merit abounds.

Congrats to all who got a movie finished and entered. Extra kudos to those which have entered into the second phase of this contest.

The results are very good. I'm excited to see my voting reflected in the final outcome! My results are:

Four 9 stars
One 8 star
Two 7 stars
One 6 star

That must reflect what others did, because these were obviously the strongest films from story through execution. Congratulations to everyone who got a film into the final round! Wish I was in LA for the screening.

I happened to log into the voting to check on one of the non-final films and discovered there were only the top 8 there (which is fine). My breakdown on the top 8 is

One 10 stars
Two 9 stars
Three 8 stars
Two 7 stars

If we leave our votes as they were, it would rank them exactly as we had in the preliminary voting - or will those eight films reset?

e

your ranking from the first round carries over for films you have already rated

that's why in Jason's announcement he says that if you have already rated all the top 8 films then you have already voted in the second round.

So yes your ratings are the same and carry over.

If TIME-0-RAMA.mov by DVXuserdude was an 8 last week it should be an 8 this week. You had a couple of weeks to hem and haw over what your final RATINGS should be.

Now we are just asking you to RATE the films you haven't seen in the top 8. If you watched 4 of them in the 1st round and gave out two 10's and see the second four films and think two of those are 10's also, then give them 10's. Your final vote will have four 10's and whatever you ranked the other two from the first round and whatever you rank the other two from the 2nd round.

You can have as many 10's, 8's, 4's, 1's as you feel appropriate. So the number or different selections of choices shouldn't matter. No one is saying "pick the winner" we're saying which of these films are 10's, which of these are 7's, which are 1's etc. You've already answered that for the films you saw and rated in round 1.

So the 2nd round is to get the lesser seen top films viewed and to even out the number of people that have rated each film. Not as a runoff between the top 8, as it would be in a 2nd round of RANKING vs. RATING.

What Jack said... And, also to bring brand new voters to the table who didn't vote at all in the first round for whatever reason. Equalizing the amount of votes across the finalist films from the first round, and increasing the sample size are the two goals of round two.

We've already seen new voters coming in with round two, and we've seen the gap bridge amongst the amount of votes across the films as 1st round voters are coming back and getting the films they didn't get to in the first round.

So, far the system has worked superbly on pretty much all fronts. The first round of voting saw a record number of voters for DVXFest. Now, we are equalizing that across the films, and we are getting even more voters to increase the already good sample size. We're not resetting and starting from scratch. We are just equalizing and increasing the amount of data.

Jason

I am extremely intrigued by the Panel voting. Without revealing who they are, can you tell us anymore about how high in the industry they are? I'm wondering if the Oscar winner is far and away the top person or if there are others that could be considered from the same strata. Either way, its awesome!
