AG-HPX170 - Is It Real

How do you know it's the old/same one?

Greets, Arno
The mockup looks like it's probably the same one, and every other camera in the lineup uses the same panel, so it's a reasonable guess. However, let's factor in that there's probably 7 months before these cams ship, so there's plenty of time for them to find a new panel. Doesn't mean they WILL, but at least there's time enough that we can hope.

Barry:

So the 170 eliminates the tape mechanism, and drops some weight, and stays the same price as the HVX200a?

Not certain how that falls in the marketing scheme?

Don't know if someone mentioned this, couldn't see it anywhere

It's an interview where Jan Crit. speaks about 200A little bit, and then shows of the HPX-170

Whoa.

Waveform AND Vectorscope built in.
I'd heard about the Waveform...but the Vectorscope is new news to me.
Very cool

Also added 'delete last clip' to the User Buttons.
Frame rate changes sound like they might be faster to make, without having to dig too deep into the menus.

Wow - 3 different Focus assist functions, including the 'histogram' type assist that is on the HPX.
You can also turn it on and off as you please - no longer timed.

and finally LCD FLIP FUNCTION - for those who need it.

I have to say - so far, I'm very impressed - not only with the camera itself, but with the way Panasonic has listened to what 'we' wanted.
Sounds like pretty much every feature that is on the 170 that was not already on the 200 is something that we asked for in our 'features wish list' thread.

It's good to see we're being heard.
I'm really looking forward to this camera.

EDITED TO ADD:
And interestingly they will be reintroducing the 8GB P2 card
Fuji coming out with their P2 cards this year...
and Hitachi making P2 based cameras this year...
interesting news.

The 8GB P2 card makes good sense. As spacious as 32 and 64GB cards are, I actually prefer to work in slightly smaller batches of data. I don't know, but shooting an entire feature's worth of footage onto one card (albeit a solid-state media) makes me nervous.

Hmm... wonder if Panasonic has ever thought about P2 raiding?

Has anyone figured out the space benefit in finally being able to shoot 1080/24pN?

Anyway, the 170 has a very cool specification and it would be nice to see it at $3995 as an introductory, camera-only price.

She mentioned in the video linked above that it is going to be priced "right around the 200a" Now whether that means just above or just below is still up in the air.
But I think Barry's right on this one - I won't be surprised to see it come in just below the cost of the 200a. Of course that would still be above the $4K you're hoping for.

As a side note - I just went back and read over the list User Requested Options we have stickied in the HVX forum. Every single feature Jan mentioned in that video was on our list - and out of 60 things on the list (many of which were a bit much to ask for, I think), at least 10 have been implemented in some capacity. It's possible there are other smaller bells and whistles that haven't been mentioned - but so far it looks like the 170 is delivering a good part of what the users had asked for.

Louis:

Throw in a better LCD, and I'm in.

I think this might be where you get off the bus, David.
:)

So far all signs point to 'same ol' LCD.
And I can't help but think that if there were a higher res LCD she would have mentioned it as one of the 'highlighted' features.

DAAAAAAAYYYUUUUUUUUUMM!

Thanks for the link, Luis & Derrick. I'm sold. I'm cool with the lcd with the 3x focus assist features. It aint like the sony lcd but its better than not incorporating anything at all. IMAGE FLIP kicks ass. I know the flip modules are all out, but I am just not a fan of snorkeling and awkward rigging. My question is, when you do an image flip, will that just affect the lcd viewing or will the image be recorded flipped as well? If anyone knows, please confirm.

This really separates the two cams (hvx200a and hpx170) alot more than it seemed initially.

She mentions a street price of around $5295 for the HPX170.

and the AWESOME thing is the brochure Barry_Green mentions says it's gonna be PAL/NTSC switchable, and the HMC150 supports 24p on the PAL country version, so I think it's very safe to asume that the HPX170 is gonna support 24p worldwide. AWESOME!!!!

And all the other positive things mentioned about this camera is gonna make it a legend again!!! Can't wait till this baby comes out! no doubt I'll be getting two of these!
