The biggie dvcpro50 tape! hdv codec with 2x datarate.

Obviously sony plans to do it which means NLEs will support it. Also I t would be nice if the XL H2 could take medium size DVCPRO HD tapes like the HDX 900.

Maybe I am crazy but I like tape. Am I the only one who feels this way? Don't get me wrong I like that you can transfer faster to your computer with Flash storage but Then I have to make my own backup. Plus I can always get something like a firestore for quick transfers.

I dunno, I think that the Sony XDCAM EX is going to be the yardstick by which Canon will base their follow up to the XL-H1. Canon tend to wait until everyone else has shown their cards before laying their own on the table.

HVX had the right idea with tapeless media and a decent intraframe 4:2:2 codec. Sony has improved the idea with 1/2" sensors, a proper lens, and affordable solid-state media (though the codec isn't a good as DVCPro HD). If Canon plays the field, hopefully their next camera will have the 1/2" sensors, full manual lens, tapeless recording (expresscard) of the XDCAM EX, but they'll add a good 4:2:2 intraframe codec to the mix (something along the lines of ProRes422 would be lovely!). And all in a price range to keep it competitive with the EX/HVX.

...well I can dream can't I?!

Canon will not have a DVCPro deck. It will not have 2/3" chips.

Both of these things would put it way out of the price range the XL-H1 lives in.

It would be nice if they changed the form factor. Maybe they will go with AVC and a tape-less solution.

My predictions:

-AVCHD at 25mbs (it will use tape, I presume)

- CMOS technology ( Canon invested too much in this technology)

- New 1ds Mark III technology variable for video. (Digic III, I believe, is the name of the chip/processor?)

- Body design true to the XL series.

-Same price range.

- Integration with 35mm adaptors, or possibly in house development to use Canon's still lenses.

Coming 2 quarter of 2008.

This is all speculation, by the way.

And what speculation, Sérgio! CMOS and the new HD format should be fine. Though you are good on your predictions... RED workflow in 2008 -- I didn't forget...

How are you and Macau, good fellow? Compliments to the girls [including Cati! -- to her from Telmo (Faria) also]

I think they will announce the XL-H1 at IBC in Amsterdam. This is where Canon is based and many new camea's are always announced at this event.

I am hoping for:

- 1/2" Progressive CMOS chips
- 720p, 1080i, 1080p
- 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 modes
- Over/undercranking
- 120fps mode
- Tapedrive + two tapeless slots (I would prefer plain CF)
- High-resolution viewfinder + LCD

Furthermore:

- I hope they will announce a new manual HD lens

Dreaming about:

- 2/3" chips
- no XL mount anymore, but one for Canon photography lenses
- Canon adoption of the Mini 35c

If there's no XL mount then there's no reason to call it an XL-H2. What would be cool is they built interchangeable lens mounts so you can switch between the "stock" XL mount and one for their L-series photography lenses.

We'd all love a built-in 35mm relay/mirror. But I doubt it'll ever happen.

Why would you want to use their photography lenses? It'll all come out ultra telephoto. Plus an adapter mount is a mere $350.

If it's going to be a 1/3" sensor then I would hope Canon would make a 24-70mm (35mm equivevelent) stock lens. Then an EF mount would be useful for telephoto focal lengths.

I would definitely want it to use thier photography lenses. Some of us use extreme telephoto quite a bit for wildlife subjects. Canon is well known for having some really good photo lenses.

I think it's safe to say the 20x stock lens has too much reach for 90% of people who use it. I know that while I like having that much reach, It's not practical for me because my tripod isn't even solid enough to keep the camera that steady. I would rather see the 20x lens cover more wide focal lengths and leave the extreme telephoto stuff for people who have special needs.

It would be great if it was to move to 1/2" 3CMOS. Also dump the auto lens and ship it stock with a 16x manual/servo HD lens. Make it record 1080p at variable frame rates to compact flash cards. Make the built-in viewfinder able to flip the image for 35mm adapters. And most of all, add more bulk to the back to balance the weight. Call it the XL-H2 and charge $8000 for it and you've got an awesome camera.

From what I have heard from Canon, its going to be able to record onto Flash cards, and I think it'll be CMOS too...

Apparently they cannot produce 2/3 CCDs bcs they have this agreement with Sony not to produce cameras that will compete directly with Sony's broadcast cameras - seeing as Canon also makes broadcast lenses, they could find they lose this market if they dont respect the relationship with Sony...

So, they just want to excel in making the best smaller CCD cameras that they can. And Sony are upping the stakes with their latest cameras, so Canon have gotta do something pretty special with the H2 to keep their loyal customers!

Expect more at NAB

Not to doubt you or anything, but what is the source behind this information?

ChrisDTV your sources were wrong! The new XL H1s is a minor update that is overpriced yawn. Maybe 2 years from now we will see the XL H2 we wanted.
