Best editing program? Vegas, premiere

Im trying to figure out what program would be best suited to edit a feature film, so it'll be aimed for festival screens. Filmed with a dvx100.

Which had better rendering, which is the fastest. Stuff like that. Im running a pentium 1.9 duel core with 2 gigs of ram, 200 gigs of hardrive, of course if the video files take up all the space ill buy an external hard drive, 500gig's goes cheap these days.

So I want to maximize on the 24p etc. Im not to worried about special effects editors because ill be jumping from magic bullit, to vision labs, and after effects. Or any comments on good pairings will be nice.

I'd rather quality over speed

There probably isn't enough of a gap in quality between the two that would quantify one over the other. You should go with the one you feel most comfortable using.

I know you're running windows, but I love Final Cut. A huge part of that is because I love the MAC so much.

Same here! If video quality is a priority, and that's usually why people spend the money to get a quality camera in the first place, why go for a second best editing system. No flame war intended but when it comes to visuals, photo or video, Mac can't be beat.

I have Final Cut Pro on my home computer and shudder to consider using anything else.

Especially when one uses the word "feature film" as a stated desire for their end product.

CS3 has pretty much closed the gap with Vegas, as far as 24P integration goes.

For input, they work mostly the same. Not for output, though, or conversion of other framerates TO 24p. Vegas still stomps on that.

Still, they're close enough so that if you PREFER the look, feel, and flow of Premiere over Vegas, then Premiere is going to be your better choice.

ive used avid and finalcutpro and vegas... and for me, vegas is quickest seemless way to make something, I am sure rendering with fcp on a mac is prob faster etc but editing wise, you cant go wrong with vegas, and vegas seems to be clsoing in to fcp a tiny bit I would think cuz ive noticed 8.0 has the same layout as fcp pretty much now.

Agreed!

For the original question Vegas Vs. Premeier.... I have been using premier for years. I went to vegas a few months ago and haven't looked back.

I went from Canopus, to Premiere, to Vegas. The more I use Vegas, the more I like it. And I started with Vegas6 and am not at 8. When you consider that it comes bundled with a very powerful DVD creator, a powerful audio suite, and a nice titler, for $500... well...

It's not perfect, but it's close enough for me. I sure do wish they'd leverage a GPU though so I could upgrade graphics cards instead of motherboards!

Slightly off topic, but Vegas seems to get a bad rap because of it's low price. Well, that's not really accurate if you consider that Vegas is a stand-alone software, whereas FCS is a bundle. If you could purchase just Final Cut, I would bet that the price would be about the same, somewhere between six and seven hundred dollars.

Regardless, Vegas is an awesome NLE. I've edited on FCS, and I personally like Vegas better. I would only change over if my primary industry job were editing because Final Cut is what's used in most studios.

wow..sorry not to be an ass but come on.. what best software to edit a feature on/with???????? who cares if you are editing a feature or music video or whatever, who cares if it goes into a festiva or its for your buddies or just dvd rlease..makes no difference whatsover. I'm glad that you are entering a festival/s -good luck and have fun. Ultimately your story will win over the audience and not what you used to edit. Most NLE's support 24p footage.

USe what you know, if you dont know anything try them all and find the best one that suits you.

I can edit a feature on movie maker if i have to, this debate is silly.. all these whats better is silly...

Sorry. That's just simply asinine.

Wow! If that's the level of your discussion abilities, from a moderator no less, then I'll pass.

My thirty years in the business actually making a full-time buck, having used both PC and Mac...well, I'll take my opinion and move on.

You know, it is early on a holiday. That a mod is already slogging away over DVXUser with a luke-warm cup of coffee is a miracle!

Take what you can get.

I'll put in another vote for Vegas. I didn't see what you plan for your final output, but Vegas has a terrific, common-sense interface. I've never come into a situation where there wasn't a straight-forward solution to a technical challenge.

Early on (back when they were SF), the resolution-independent platform and 24 frame support made it a no-brainer for me. We cut all of our tasters in Vegas.
