Golf is a sport !

This is another periodic debate that rages from time to time. I love it.

You natives know my stance on the subject; but ...

One must appreciate the ESPN's Degree of Difficulty: Sport Rankings

Golf ranks right on next to Ping Pong, Bowling and Cheerleading.

(Bwhahaahahahahahahhahahahahaha !)

My two favortie sports to play; tennis and basketball are 7th and 4th respectively.

(Let the riot begin!) :bath:  :D

In today's 24 hour sports news cycle, EVERYTHING is a sport. They even show the Spelling Bee on ESPN.

Regardless, of what anybody thinks, golf IS a sport. No it's not a team sport, it's more a man against the course sport.

I was always saying it is no sport, until I tried it one day. Hitting some balls at the driving range. I was sweating (well, it was insanely hot in Manila) and on the next day I had so bad sore muscles on my back, where I have never even imagined any muscles.

A SPORT is anything that requires athletic ability, can be done competitively, and is scored on an objective scale of achievement. In other words, ice dancing is NOT a sport.

Golf is the oddest of all sports though I think. In all honesty it really pits man against himself more than any other sport.

In the PGA they play the same course four days in a row and with the exception of the top four all of the golfers are comparably of the same ability. I think it is just a testament to the "great" golfers how strong they are mentally.

It is an incredibly rewarding sport or an incredibly frustrating game to play but becomes even more rewarding/frustrating the better you get...

Golf doesn't require any serious notion of atheletic ability Blaine. Not to say some Pros aren't an exception (Tiger for example) but no. That's why overweight old men in their 50's are still competing on the tour.

Fred Funk ? Craig Stadler ? Sam Snead played on the tour at 63. Jerry Barber was 77 at the 1994 Buick Invitational.

Give me a effin break.

Look, it's a 'sporting activity' and one in which I personally enjoy doing from time to time (along with some beer and dogs) but it's about as much a sport as Croquet or lawn bowling.

I'd say tennis is much more mental. Golfers are playing the same course, over and over and over. The only thing changing is the breeze.

(I love this debate! It's too easy.)

didnt twain say something like,
"golf is a good walk spoiled" ?

i sort of like golf but it is a skill. not a sport. how can anything be a sport when a player rides around in a battery operated cart? at the very least, get out and walk. or - drink your beer and motor yourself in the putput mobile and enjoy the nice day, but then be cool with golf being called something other than a sport. a sportito, if you will.

speed golf could be fun though.

remember " falling down " ? " now you're going to die with that stupid little hat on, all because you didn't want to share that beautiful land with anybody, how does that feel?" ( i paraphrase, roughly ... )
