Yes, I've taken the MySpace plunge

Maybe theres more call for someone in a large market like yourself. Smaller markets like the one I'm in are unlikely to provide any good exposure.
I think Norm and I are thinking mail order and internet promotion as well

Well I hope I read stories about your success, maybe I'll sign up at that time. And I didn't mean to imply you'd use it as a hookup site envision. I was only saying that theres two kinds of people on myspace, people looking for hookups, and people looking for free promotion. I didn't figure you were in the first group :)

And about the christian thing, I guess my question was, why mention it if it has nothing to do with your product or image? And no, I wouldn't imagine most people would mention it to you as controversial, I'm not saying it is. But the people who would find it controversial likely wouldn't mention it to you at all, their opinion would likely just change quietly, unbeknownst to you.

True ... but I think for most people, they'll interpret that the way it's meant ... that there are values in place, etc that will keep my films in check (i.e. trying not to have things that go against my grain), but that I'm not trying to put out "Chrisitan films". Just good ol' entertainment in a variety of genres.

And I know exactly what you're talking about as far as how can it be successful if the only people you're promoting to are other promoters and people looking to hook up? Well, people looking to hook up watch movies too, so hopefully there's some sales there. And the same goes for the other group.

I always avoid those business networking functions for the VERY reason you're questioning MySpace ... but I'm hoping and feel like this will be different than those business fairs where everyone's pawning their goods.

Time will soon tell. Our DVD should be ready within a couple weeks at the latest, and we'll begin marketing it heavily through MySpace then ... I'll keep this thread posted on the results.

Well seriously man, good luck. Every success story on here is inspiration for me to get off my massive butt and do something useful!

And I understand about the Christian thing more. IE: You're not going to make a Bill Zebub, "Jesus Christ: Serial Rapist" movie.

Makes sense. I just noticed it and most of the people online who claim affiliation publicly, Christian, Pagan, Republican, whatever, seem to be looking for some kind of response.

In our present charged political and social world generally people keep to themselves their personal ideals for want of non-alienation. But I understand where you're coming from.

I hope I didn't come off as accusatory or standoffish.

... or ... other filmmakers (who may be self promoting) and musicians (who may be self promoting) ect. but all who may have projects you may be interested in or that may be intretested in your project and may want to work on it or who may buy your dvd or who may say "did you see that guy on myspace"

I think that's called networking.

There's a small production company on there that makes really cheap features that loves my work. I'm not nuts about theirs but I know they are going into production soon and I may message them asking if I can volunteer on set for a day or two or observe ... why because I'll be shooting a very low budget feature soon and I want to see how the hell they are doing it and who on their team I might want to work with.

Why wouldn't I want to know about an opportunity like that (especially in my own backyard) even if they are only on their self promoting too?

That's also the majority of the people you will meet at film festival ... other filmmakers promoting their stuff. Yes there's more of that and fewer if any critics or distributors on myspace, but just like at an indie film festival, other filmmakers are still an audience and just like at an indie film festival they can buzz your movie just as well as any one else.

You can get hung up on it being a lame teenage dating site, or you can use it as a tool and limit your more social interactions with people very much like yourself.
Well said. Not even joking, half of my crew on my next movie is from MySpace networking (not that my crew numbers are huge by any means, but still)... And I may very well land my primary location from a response to a bulletin I posted looking for a certin type of location. MySpace is a GREAT tool, if you put in the effort and use it wisely (kinda like everything else).

let me help you understand...

joke /d?o?k/ noun, verb, joked, jok?ing.

1. something said or done to provoke laughter or cause amusement, as a witticism, a short and amusing anecdote, or a prankish act: He tells very funny jokes. She played a joke on him.

2. something that does not present the expected challenge; something very easy: The test was a joke for the whole class.

3. practical joke.

4. to say something in fun or teasing rather than in earnest; be facetious: He didn't really mean it, he was only joking.

5. to subject to jokes; make fun of; tease.

ROFL
who me? :love4:

some say we're all nothing but "troublemakers" in Flint Michigan, man! We forced companies to create medical benefits, sick days, and vacation pay. Then we invented the Corvette, passed the first anti-discrimination laws for housing, and were the first city to play The Who and AC/DC!

Not content with that, one of us made a small indie movie about some auto layoffs which sorta changed the face of documentary filmmaking forever.

Another one of us decided he had it with building sets and flying to locations and filmed the first no-set, all green screen movie!

Some people think those things caused trouble. Others think they were a long time coming.

I guess its a matter of perspective

REPRESENT!

But the joke thing is true. I told Shawn the first time I met him I knew I liked him because I could bust his balls all day long about Flint, and he would get it.
