HVX to HDD through the firewire

Hi,

I ve just upgraded from DVX100 to HVX200. I have 16GB P2 card and Western Digital my book 1TB hard disc.
I connected hvx to HDD through fireware. I switched HVX to "host" mode. But it only gives "too many targets" error. I tried all but i could not solve it yet.

I am wondering if anybody connect HVX to external hard disc through the fireware in "host" mode? If yes what is the hard disc brand and the size of the hard disc.

I am trying to understand what is wrong in my setup? It is hard disc or size of the hard disc? should i buy smaller one?

The HVX can not record to your HDD, it can only transfer recorded video from your p2 card to the HDD just like it would to your computer.
I have never dumped directly to the HDD with out the use of a computer so I can not be much help there.

hi robert,
i do not mean "direct recording to HDD" after i recorded to P2 i should transfer P2 files directly to HDD.
So instead of bringing my MAC to the place i can only bring small external HDD. So here is the workflow.
1.record to P2
2.when P2 full switch HVX to 'Host' mode
3.Copy the files from P2 to HDD (and empty P2)
4.Shoot again.

I know HVX directly record to Firestore 100. But i do not mean "directly record". I mean copy to HDD

Any solution?
Is it possible?
I record to P2 and whenever i loaded P2 i can transfer the files to HDD

Yes it is possible to do that, I know that somewhere in the instructions it says you can, and Im pretty sure Barry Green posted a topic here on exactly how to do it. There is a HDD format that happens by the camera to the HDD in the process at some point before the transfer.

The only thing I can think you may be doing wrong is not providing power to the HDD via a battery or AC adapter. The HVX200 does not provide the HDD power. I have seen people use an APC battery back up as the power source. You can also use the power from the USB port on a computer.

People who have run into this problem before have solved it by using a more powerful power supply. We had a spate of reports a few months ago of people having this problem, and supplying more juice helped.

As robert said, the hVX cannot supply power to the hard disk, you have to have a proper and adequate AC power supply for the drive.

Hi Barry,
My hard disc (Western Digital My Book 1TB) has seperate power unit. So i do not get power from HVX.
I suspect two things;
1. One TB is more than HVX can recognise. May be i should buy a smaller one.
2. It can be a format problem.

There is no other option i can try. What should i do?

I haven't tried a drive that large with the hvx, so I don't know if that's the issue or not.

Try a different firewire cable?

You'd need some manner of external power supply for any hard disk connected to an HVX200 or HPX500. The NextoDI CF2525 is a battery-powered firewire unit that can last for up to 110GB of data transfer so that might be an option if you want to avoid a computer entirely.

So I have another question along these lines, but can't find a thread with an answer.

I have the 500gb my book powered hard drive. I can put the p2 footage on fine, but everytime I hook it to the HVX it only gives me the option to format it again. So I can't put multiple loads of my 16gb P2 card without deleting what I previously put on there even if it the same footage.

Is there a way to do this? Do I need to partition this into little 16gb parts? Would that even work?

Don't know what issues you're running into, but in a normal properly-operating system you can keep offloading more and more cards up until a maximum of 15 cards. You do not need to partition the drive; the HVX creates a new partition every time you tell it to offload a card.

I have the drive connected by firewire and the camera in 1395 HOST mode in the PC dub. When I connected it I formatted it from the camera but when I reconnect (even without connecting the drive to a computer or other device) the only options that come up are "Format (HDD), Property, and Setup" The "copy to HDD" is grayed out. No error messages.

Haha... yeah, I got that one figured out by myself.

I shoot the footage. Connect to the powered HDD by firewire. It only gives me the option to reformat it again. So if I do that and Copy to HDD if I disconnect and reconnect (to shoot some more great stuff) then it only gives me the option to format it again.

The WD My Books have a raid controller on board that is also formating the 2 disks inside. I think that`s your problem.

only my ct2
