maximum fps any Panasonic camera can shoot at???

I have a Panasonic HVX200 and I know that it can't shoot more than 60fps at 720p.

Question: Is there any other Panasonic camera out there that can shoot more than 60 fps at 720p24?

If not, does anyone know of any plans Panasonic may have to follow up the HVX200 with a sequel that might shoot beyond 60fps...dare I say 1000 fps.

Or is the case that the only cameras that can shoot at that speed cost in 100K range.

Current Panasonic cameras don't go above 60 fps. The chances of a follow-up HVX shooting 1000 fps are pretty much zero.

A camera shooting that fast is a pretty specialized thing, and they are very rarely cam-corders, meaning they both shoot and record all in one unit (if there are any at all). They are usually cameras needing a separate recording deck, and neither they nor the decks are cheap. You would be looking at at least tens of thousands of dollars, if not the $100K range that you're asking about.

Also, in order to maintain that speed of recording, they usually have to step down the resolution. Recording 1000 fps is usually not at full high-definition resolution.

I agree. What about Red? Is it correct that it shoots beyond 60fps in 720p/24 mode, 72 fps? 120fps?

Well, as far as an HVX200 sequel goes, maybe its crazy to hope for anything as high as 1000fps, but I wonder if Panasonic could improve on the 60fps maximum to say 72fps or 120fps?

Or is there something special about 60fps that would prohibit an HD camcorder from being able to record anything beyond that speed? Do you suppose it's a limitation that will soon be overcome?

The NTSC video system is based around a 60Hz picture, so there are no (main stream) standards in place for faster image encoding .. anything above 60fps has to be a special proprietary format for each system - which in itself creates a niche market.

I believe Red is slated to record up to 100fps in 2k windowed mode, 60fps in 4k to a tethered RAID.

Red has no 720p/1080p recording modes.

RED will shoot at 120 fps in 2k when it is enabled. At this time it is not.

Also, Phantom HD is a rental only system I believe. Even if one could afford it, I don't think it can be bought.

Hmmmmm, either I'm a little confused or no one in here has a clue what this is actually all about. Isn't 720p/24 . . 24 fps? That is how can one even think about discussing 60/120/ or whatever . . /24 is 24 frames per second . . in that mode that's all you can get right? That is, there isn't a 24 fps that shoots 60 frames per second. If I'm wrong then geez, clue me in so I can quit this business then and go back to being a rocket scientist . . that was easy compared to this stuff.

"full rate" DVCPRO-HD 720 is always 60fps .. if you are in "24p" mode, you are SHOOTING 24fps, but RECORDING 60fps (meaning that frames are duplicated to "fill in" to the full 60frames required of the codec at full speed in "realtime" mode used on tape or firewire or other "live" transfers.

The 24pN mode is different in that it only actually records the same 24 frames that you shoot (taking up less memory on P2 cards).. but you can't record it to tape or transfer it over any "live" real-time transfer stream.

Also, in 720 mode (P *or* N modes), you can shoot in 24p mode AT 60 fps, meaning the camera will shoot 60 frames per second but record it at a rate of 24 fps.

Of course, in P mode, it's recording the 60 fps at a rate of 24 fps but still duplicating frames to pull it up to 60 fps again.

Still confused? :)
