Combine 24pa and 60i?

Hi,

I taped a bunch of footage in 24pa and captured it correctly (29.97), put it into a 24p sequence (23.98), and have edited it.

Then I wanted to compost some 60i footage behind it, specifically, the cloud stock footage that ships in Motion2. I matted out the part of the 24pa footage and layered the cloud stock behind it (I did all of this in FCP since I have no idea how to use Motion). Everything looked great before the render and I was able to scrub through the footage slowly and watch it.

When I render, everything renders, but when I watch it, the 60i footage disappears! It only leaves behind the 24pa footage. I've tried rendering it a few times only to have the same thing happen again and again.

Can you mix 24pa and 60i? Anyone have an idea around this?

Thanks,
Ted

One thing you can do is get the Nattress Standards Conversion filters ($100... www.nattress.com). These filters not only convert PAL <-> NTSC but there is a 24p conversion filter which will convert 60i to 23.98. You can also get the Nattress Film Effects filters which have some great film looks and convert 60i footage to 24p but with the pulldown. You can then remove the pulldown in Cinema Tools.

Just a heads up I wouldn't recommend using 60i material in a 24p timeline. This is the reason you are having to render, which you shouldn't. FCP is trying to fit all the frames in to a 24 frame sequence and it is not meant to be dealt with this way. Some people mix 24pa and 60i in a 30 frame sequence and it looks fine... I avoid mixing the two because you can still end up with glitches, artifacts and even strobing; anyone else? I am yet to mix the two cleanly. Someone else can explain this better but unless it is just 24p and the pulldown isn't removed you may have issues. I believe Vegas mixes the two nicely. If you edit a project of 24pa & 60i in a 30p timeline i would watch on a monitor before you export which still isn't the final look. Your other alternative is to edit just the 24pa footage in a 30 sequence with your realtime playback on high, print to tape and recapture that. As far as 60i material disappearing what exactly do you mean? You can only see it while scrubbing? Try a different clip with the same settings, maybe another 24pa clip. This could be the issue. I've heard some strange things but this i dunno.

I found the answer to my question. I moved my 24PA footage to Motion and then applied the chroma key and clouds stock in the program. When I exported out of Motion, all of it worked well.
