What do you use for monitoring while editing your video....

Id like to see what its going to look like on tv while editing. Do you use a TV or computor monitor?

If you use a TV which one do you recommend....I shoot with Dvx100b in squeeze mode mainly. Edit on Adobe PP2

Thanks,
Jeff

The BEST thing to use is a calibrated studio-quality NTSC monitor, because TVs have correction features which hide imperfections in color, etc..

But between a TV and your computer monitor, you should use a TV. Things which look fine on your computer monitor may look horrible on a TV, so you need to know that before you finalize.

I'd use a CRT with a flat screen.

Thanks for the advice.....but

Since the majority of TVs will soon be LCD and not CRT...looks like to me one should use the LCD type TV. Why am I wrong here?

An LCD wont show the full dynamic range. Just like a good pair of audio monitors you want to see/hear everything. If you CC it on a calibrated broadcast CRT it will look good/correct everywhere it is shown. You can mix audio on cheap computer speakers too, just dont be surprised when someone pops it onto a large home theater and hears a bass track you didnt know you had.

What he said.

I notice on my 4:3 CRT that my squeeze mode footage is still "squeezed". It is displayed correctly in FCP and my capture cam has a 16:9 lcd display.

I have the firewire connected to my mac and the rca cables connected to the TV.

Shouldn't my footage be displayed unsqueezed on my 4:3 monitor or do I have to use a widescreen TV as well to show the full image?

Squeeze is 4:3. It's just that 16:9 displays will stretch it out. You have to have a 16:9 monitor, or one that is switchable. The Sony PVM-series (L2) monitors were 4:3, but had a 16:9 mode that compressed the image vertically to letterbox.

OK.
I can see how a proper CRT is going to be better...

QUESTION: Can a good one be had for less than 500 bucks???
The ones I found searching online were generally OVER $1,000 !!! Eeeeek!

Any suggestions?

They aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I'd look for used. You want a good, professional monitor with proper controls to let you calibrate it (like blue-only).

Here's something which has what you're looking for, at least by the specs. Can't vouch for it as I've never seen one in action, but at least in theory, it should be much better than any consumer TV you'd use.

I just got a sony pvm1954q yesterday for 35 bucks used from kijiji. Works perfectly. Jealous? lol

You should check ebay, kijiji, and craigslist because sometimes people have em going for really cheap.

David and BlackDogs,

Thanks.
Clearly this is just "one of those costs" that can't be sidestepped.
I usually do well on eBay and Craigslist, but I have no problem with the JVC David pointed to.

I was in this thought as well and I (being a professional photographer first) use 7 19" calibrated (USB cable to computer) LaCie Blue III CRT monitors. CRT being the main factor as I cannot stand the skin tone and small details being over colored or dis-proportioned as I get on my MacBook Pro LCD screen or any of the other Flat LCD monitors I own. I just cannot trust the LCDs out there as of yet.

As far as video goes, I use the LaCie CRTs and I plan on buying a pro monitor off of the large auction site as they have a lot of them from around $35.00 and up. Mostly because of the LCD jump, these monitors are not expensive to buy second hand as long as they are tested and calibrated before you use them. Good luck on this one. As everyone knows ... I am not a fan of the new viewing technology and I think it is all a scam. LCD for me is bad and I preach that to all that ask me in my area. CRT is good ... LCD is bad ... IMO.
