Sony XDCAM EX

Finally get to play and shoot the new cam today. A couple of quick grabs (Jpeg compression) from XDCAM EX 720p HQ. The footage was captured STOCK straight out of the box, without any adjustment whatsoever in the picture profile, no sharpening, no gamma adjustments ....etc. The 1st pic of every set is the original image, others were some quick CC, to see the toughness of the XDCAM EX Codec. Will post all QT files as soon as I found a host (any taker please ??)

Dxmetal. Why not start a new thread since you seem to be the only one giving updates on testing. It will be a very helpful thread.. Call it the dxmetal tests the exmettle.

The XDCAM EX Clip Browser software supplied on the CDROM in the box will NOT export HQ clips (in any 1920 format) or SP 720 clips to MXF for use, for example, in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. However, there is a newer (1.1 something) version that can be found here:

http://www.sonybiz.net/biz/view/ShowContent.action?site=biz_en_GB&contentId=1193315622075

On this site, there is a 129MB archive that has a BUNCH of other files in it, including other .ZIPs. The one you are probably looking for (Windows folks) is named:

ClipBrowserForWinV1[1].01EN.zip

Mmmmmm Macroblocking...... :/

The FX1 looked pretty underexposed and bad, the EX not too bad. I think the intent was to show the light characteristics - the EX being far more light sensitive.

As for the aesthetics, well, probably not the most artistic, but it does make the point

LOL
Obviously very low light.
I think it's a good assumption that both cameras apertures where wide open and the the test was to display the sensitivity difference.

I'd say there's QUITE a bit of difference.

As far as image qualty goes...
Probably not so good, but under those conditions, no light added gain, I'm not surprised.
I know several other cameras under those conditions where it looked like it was snowing.

If the FX1 was at +9 dB of gain and still produced a dark image, it sure gives you an idea
of the low light conditions. Again, I can only image the apertures were wide open.
I can't imagine why they would of not been.

John, could we get a comparison under low to moderate light (apertures wide open) with no gain added for these cameras?

The review on creative cow was a pretty interesting read. It was nice to see that the codec did not break on the fast motion boat scenes at high quality 35 mb VBR setting.
