PS Store vs FS100

Is anyone here using the FS100 with the HPX? Trying to decide between that and the P2 Store as a field recorder.

P2 Store isn't a field recorder, it's a data vault for storing information from your P2 cards, so they're not in any way competitive with each other.

Not that I'm necessarily voting for the FS in this scenario -
but I'm not sure I would invest in a P2 store anytime soon, given that 32GB cards are around the corner and 64GB cards aren't far behind.

The P2 Store only holds 60gb.
Its going to be interesting to see if Panasonic decides to update this piece of gear, or just let it fade.

My bet is on it fading away. The P2 Gear seems to be the designated upgrade path, in that it uses external hard disks so there's no limit to drive capacity. Quite a bit pricier, but it also does clip playback, HD-SDI output, and waveform/vectorscope on its monitor.

I just cancelled our order for the P2 Store. We will use a laptop in the field until were sure about the best solution. Still not entirely happy about the P2 workflow at this point in time.

They are in a way, in that they both offer a "In the field" storage solution when P2 cards are at capacity. Though the 60GB capacity on the P2 Store is really pretty dismal. Ive got more on my iPod.

Although I have only had my HPX 500's for about 3 weeks, and am still learning the intricacies about the brave new world of P2, I would agree with the workflow comment.

Everything seems like a work-around, or a bandaid solution.

What we really need (at least IMO), is a large capacity direct-to-disc solution with preview capabilities. I want to hang a 500GB HDD off of my belt and blast away for hours on end.

Or... affordable card solutions. $800 for a 16GB card is ridicules.

I agree ($1200 in Oz, thats $75 a Gig), when u consider it costs $30 for an 23GB XDCAM disc. I think the idea of a "solid state" camera is great but in practise it's falling short at the moment. Im speaking from a MAC/FCP veiw point. Im ending up with 2 sets of media, 1 in XMF and 1 in Quicktime. So at the moment my storage demands have gone ballistic. Not only am I buying expensive P2 cards, but Im having to double my hard drive capacity. At least im ending up with backup media I suppose. But re diging offline quicktimes from the XMF files will be interesting. Sometimes I think they would have been better off putting a large flash memory in the camera, and offer a 2.5"hot swap hard drive enclosure on the back near the battery.

Im am sure some of the issues will be worked through in time, and we have put some faith in PS and bought an HPX. Though we also have a RED coming :)

In practice it works brilliantly. With all due respect, it's the Mac/FCP side that's falling short. Those guys at Apple need to get their act together and provide proper fully-integrated P2 support.

By the way Barry. I got hooked on the P2 idea a few years ago when you did a presentation at Park Road Post in Wellington. Just a shame we're still waiting for Apple to support it.

Oh, excellent. So you flew all the way over from Perth to NZ? That's like 8 hours, isn't it? Haven't made it to the west coast of Australia yet...

As far as Apple being busy with the Red -- that's entirely possible. No way to really know what drives these companies, but I found Mikko's report about Premiere/MXF support to be fascinating. The BBC is going with P2, and they told Adobe something on the order of "hey, we're going P2: if you add support, we'll use Premiere." Quicker than you can blink, the whole Adobe CS3 suite is getting upgraded for full native P2 support.

Thirty thousand end-users demanding better support doesn't appear to matter. But one massive high-profile customer like the BBC can make all the difference. If Apple wants to get further into organizations like the BBC or Scripps or Media General or Fox, they'll come around and offer integrated support. Ball's in their court, really.

No, Im a Kiwi. Moved to Perth 18 months ago to start my own production company.

Pretty much used all the major editing packages..cut my teeth on Media100. Never liked Premiere much though. Did some TV broadcast work with PremierePro it back in NZ last year, nice programme but the FCP interface is more user friendly and some minor things like not being able to export still frames off the timline really bugged me . There is also the gringe factor in the industry when you mention Premiere - it's a programme people have always got for free bundled with something else. It's never been thought of as a "Professional Programme" Youd rather have Avid or FCP on your resume than Premiere. Not saying that the tools makith the mechanic at all. Ive seen some pretty impressive stuff cut with iMovie. At the end of the day your only butting one peice of video up to another to make a story.

Im a big fan of Vegas though, my number 1 pc cutter.

Hey Brad Neal,

I'm providing a Mod for the FS-100 that will allow you swap out HDs. I already have a working version on my FS-100, but just ironing out the kinks. (so this idea of a huge HD on your belt and shooting away is just around the corner.)

I probably will be providing a 250gb drive version provided that the FS-100 will handle the partitions smoothly. will get my 250gb drive this week and will be conducting test.

I should have my web site up ready to take orders next week.

Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,

Luis

ps: if you are working with rails, also check out my other products. you will need to power up the FS-100 for long periods of time once you have more storage, and the Tekkeon batteries have lasted around 4.5hrs + 1hr of the on board battery for a total of 5hr+ of FS-100. with 2 tekkeon you could get around 10-11hrs.

Luis,
Let me know how your tests go.

What is the pricing for your mod setup?

-Brad

Brad,

I'm still trying to figure out the pricing for this thing. The reason why its to difficult for me is because if something goes wrong, I'm responsible for an $1800 piece of equipment. So I have to factor the posibility of that in.

I'm estimating that the introductory price will be aroud $385 for the mod. Then

The 100 gig drive = $200-225 (estimated) ($2.25 peg gig)
the 160 gig drive = $275-300 (estimated) ($1.88 per gig)
the 250 gig drive = $375-400 (estimated) ($1.60 per gig)

I might even offer a 60 gig for $175 or so. ($2.92 per gig)
(what's good about this is also, you can charge your client for the HDs and then use them as achival storage. Kind of like with tapes. You can use a hd for each project. Thats where the 60 gig ones would come in handy. think about the time you would save in archiving footage)
Let me know what you think.
Luis

I am one of the guys waiting for you to have all this firestore forever mod finished.
How long would you get on a 250 gig drive at 720 PN?

PM me know when you are ready Siniarch!

Hey Steve,
I know I know. I'm working on it. The cases for the HD that I want are out of stock. they should have shipped on the 3rd, but I'm calling them right now to see.
As far as the 250gig. in theory it would record 2.5x the regular drive. according to Focus, you can get 4.2 hrs in a 100gig. then you would be able to get just over 10hrs with the 250gig. I haven't tested that but will do it today.
I'll keep you informed.

I've used Luis's modded firestore and it's a thing of beauty.
Not worrying about record times in a wonderful thing.
