Capturing 720p/pn direct to FCP (HVX-202EN)

Hi guys,

I can't seem to capture DVCPRO HD 720p directly into FCP. I'm using the Australian HVX-202EN and FCP doesn't seem to support any of the 720p stuff natively. It has all the options for 24p but not 25.

Is there any way to capture 720p (25p, 25pn) direct into FCP?

Help is greatly appreciated.

Hey,
What version of fcp are you using?
FCP6 (the newest) works perfectly with 720/25p or 720/25pN footage.
I'd say upgrade to 6 if you're using fcp 5.

Tom

FCP6 will not capture directly from the cam any pNative footage because pNative footage will not stream out firewire.

you know this may be somewhere on the boards, but why doesn't 24pN output via firewire?? I mean it's data right? I am just wondering if Panny could offer a firmware update to make that possible.....If would be great to be able to go direct to disk with the smaller file advantage.

You already can go direct to disk with the smaller file advantage. Avid, EDIUS, DV Rack 2.0HD, and I believe FCP also will strip out the pulldown and record the equivalent of 24pN directly.

Now don't I feel silly....I've owned dvRack for a year now and I had no idea it captured equivalent to 24pn(:?? it must pull down on the fly huh. Thanks that's some great fyi

You might want to confirm that DV Rack 2.0 HD will strip out redundant frames on the fly.

I know ScopeBox does that on the Mac, but I'm not certain that's true of DV Rack 2.0 HD

With DV Rack 2.0 HD, stripping the duplicate frames is a user-selectable option. The way you configure it is kind of goofy, it clearly was an afterthought.

Here is how it works: in the recorder menu is an option that lets you select between Type 1 and Type 2 AVI files to allow you to create files that are compatible with your NLE. However, since DVCProHD can only be saved in Type 2 files, the Type 1 vs. Type 2 option takes on a different and non-obvious meaning for DVCProHD: if you set the AVI Type to Type 1, DV Rack will still create a Type 2 file, but it will strip out the duplicate frames.

This is documented in the online help, but few people are aware of it.

What about quicktime files?? is there a way to drop the redundant frames using QT?

I don't think it does Barry.

I'll do a quick test this morning with the cam set to 720/24p and a 720/24p sequence setting with remove duplicate frames.

I do know Scopebox does this on a Mac.

Not that I know of.
Just to be clear, when I wrote this it was under the assumption that we are talking about DV Rack 2.0 HD capturing in QuickTime format. Other programs like DV Monitor HD, FCP and Scopebox may well handle this differently.

But isn't t1 and t2 avi files?? in your original response you had said that capture t1 and it will turn it into t2 with dropped frames.....but what about when your capturing, still using DVRack, to quicktime files?

Then you can't do it -- that is the point I was trying to make in post #12. DV Rack can only remove the duplicate frames if you are capturing to AVI, and you'll always be getting a Type 2 file for DVCProHD, regardless of whether you selected Type 1 or Type 2.

Cool, don't know why that one got confusing.....that's a bummer you can't do it with quicktime files.

Why not just import the P2 volumes from camera mounted as a USB disk and then import into FCP to synthesize .mov capture scratch files? worked for me with hours of 720p/24pN material....no extra software, no hassle

what's the fuss?

wow, this thread got way off topic.

my two cents' worth - and i just shot 720pn on the HVX202EN (in australia too) for the first time last week:

the camera assistant dumped all the P2 onto an external HDD as we were going. i transferred all the footage via the 'import --> panasonic p2' feature in FCP 5.1.4. no problems whatsoever with it.*

personally that's my only experience working with the p2 workflow, however only the other day i picked up my own hvx202! i haven't even had a chance to shoot anything yet (too busy getting a music video done) but am not looking forward to discovering all these little faults. i don't have a laptop of my own and have always had someone else to look after the p2 stuff!

*(once again off topic, i discovered a nasty glitch with the labelling: in the panasonic p2 import window i labelled all the clips before importing them. i soon discovered that roughly a quarter of the clips simply weren't being imported; their filenames would appear in the capture scratch folder along with everything that was successfully imported, but with truncated names and a size of 4kb. however, when i imported them without labelling them, it all worked fine.)
