"Sleeper" by Matt Sconce and Mark Aro

Another Huge Render is going on right now. These renders take anywhere from 2-10 hours to complete and we are pulling punches. If we had the renders where we wanted them, each would take a week to do. That will come after the fest. Mark is growing used to not sleeping and has had a caffeine drip permanently installed in his left arm. We shall see.

Rendering is a major pain! where I work we use maya, so I'm rendering different scenes on other peoples computers. Still takes ages though :(

I've basically stripped all the settings for making it look more realistic (global illumination, final gatherer etc) and just opted for simple no thrills light/shadow. renders 10 x faster and looks ok for the size it will be viewed at.

Man, I swear you VFX guys are pretty hardcore. I wet my pants with excitement when I got a muzzle flash lined up for the first time with a little masking and adding some light here and there. I envy you.

I hope you guys make it. No disrespect to any other films, but Sleeper is kind of like the Summer Blockbuster of this fest! So render away, my friends.

Good luck to one of the top production duos on DVX and beyond.

Looking forward to your entry!

As a person who has just completed his own, very first VFX.... I'm with John! (cinealma)

I seriously cannot wait to see what you guys have done.... I mean, really? A week to complete an individual render????

Wow. You guys have got me so excited to see this!

That's right! I want to see the big ass bullet coming out of the barrel of the gun and then crank the camera so it slows down as we see it enter the through the supposedly bullet-proof vest. Then we switch to a "riding the bullet" view as it rips through the skin, through bone, through internal organs and then explodes out the back of the guy and straight into the spigot of a tanker trunk which explodes, freeze-framing in mid-explosion, and then back to regular speed with a large hunk of flaming truck flying at the camera to a black out!

Yeah baby!!!

UPDATE:

Well, We have been silent for a while recovering from what was a very long and hard time for us. We decided after a lengthy discussion, There was simply no way to accomplish the massive renders we needed to do for Sleeper in the amount of time we had.

We spent so much time focusing on trying to get the renders to work we neglected color correction, other effects, cut away shots....and basically a whole ton more!

Regardless, Mark and I decided that you all have been a part of Sleeper from day one so we felt we needed to post our in progress version of the movie for the competition, and include you in this step as well.

Here is what still needs to be finished:

1. Color Correction

2. All Effects Re rendered extremely high end, and perfectly masked as well.

3. Creature created to replace the place holder paint drawing at end.

4. Rain added to all rain scenes.

5. Rain animated to move off of the bodies of the people and objects inserted into scene.

6. Rain slowed for final effect.

7. All green screens keyed and replaced with environments.

8. 3D Table in vault built with rotating microchip holder, and fold out compartments holding the cash.

9. Cash put in the suitcase.

10. Vault scene finished.

11. Computer screens replaced with high tech stuff. Sound effects added.

12. Transition effect betwen vault close of suitcase and garage close of suitcase.

13. Foreground added to garage (steam from pipes, water droplets)

14. Scene in stairwell added back in, with effects.

15. Crane pull stabilized.

16. Shane jumping from garage behind Paige in alleyway (Right before she looks back)

17. Rain starting in scene by fence.

18. Cutaways added in scene after fence.

19 Lightning in sky before the push to Paige arriving at the fence.

20. Tracking matting and animating a High End Weapon Model. with SFX.

21. Refining throw with high end model.

22. Add weapon cuting through rain Slow Mo.

23. Have sword cut the weapon in half as a piece of it flies over Shane's shoulder leaving trails of smoke and fire.

24. Sync Audio and Music to correct cues.

25. Create shockwave that is shown now by a placeholder.

26. Create credits that compliment the actors crew and the movie itself.

27. bring more highness to girls voice.

28. All lightning and other cutaways completed.

29. Light in tattoo animated.

30. Screen animated to shake with tattoo energy.

31. Rope removed from scenes.

32. Wall added to make the other side of the alleyway.

33. Glowing eyes for person's transition to monster.

34. Ghosting effect for person's tranformation (transparent skin type thingy)

35. Removal of mattress and boots from scene.

36. Adding back the apartment pull out reveal to elevator agt start of film.

37. FINAL CC PASS

38. FINAL AUDIO PASS

These are the things we were trying to get done. I hope you enjoy our work in progress version of Sleeper. The High End version will be shown later when it has been completed.

Watch this rough effects first pass after the movies start showing and let us know what you think? :)

thats cool of you guys, i'd rather see your work in progress and have you get it in to the fest than have you hold off. im goin to watch it now.

OMG! That is a HUGE LIST! I applaud your honesty and attempt to bring to dvxuser such an incredible undertaking... Your film must be massive!!! You have more "to-do's left to do" then I had originally "to do!" (did that make sense?)

Anyway, bummer that you don't have your film prepared the way you would like and anticipated. I sorry for you for that. But good for you for presenting it anyway. I am dying to see it!

(btw, I am just starting to get films downloaded.... I tried your twice but no luck yet. Is it up for download?)

Best to you guys! Looking forward, regardless!

Sleeper crew -

You might have taken the cake had you been able to finish in time. Someone said in another thread, alot of folks weren't able to finish in time. I think many people didn't plan for an undertaking of SPY MOVIE EXTRAORDINAIRE and just got left with a whole buncha junk at the last minute. That being said, while viewing your movie you can still see the general direction. You had some very ambitious shots in there like the beginning one which seemed to be a huge traking shot and then I realized, Nay! It's FX. So the compositing on this one even if it isn't finished is very very well done in my opinion, and you can still imagine what's behind the green screen. Seeing the hands holding it up cracked me up. I really did like the transition from the case to the trunk - we need more of those. The ending, if finished with the thunder and lighting should be great.

Favorite shot - dolly shot in the parking lot. great great great.

I can see the bigger picture :)

Kudos on such a massive undertaking and I'm looking forward to seeing the final version of the film.

Cheers!

I saw your film before reading this and was like "what the f**k?" Now it makes sense.

I would love to see the finished film. Best of luck.
