Defaulted Reservations

Just wondering what will happen to reservations where the purchaser cannot come up with the full amount for the camera, when it ships?

They are forced to sit facing the corner wearing a pointy hat.
Seriously though, Red has stated that there will be some grace period, although they have not specified how long.

RED keeps them and places them into their service pool. These cams are then used for "hands on demos" at functions (like NAB, IBC) all over the world. Also, I like to feel that if one of the REDCORE has a catastrophic failure of the RED not due operator error (God forbid- there is a problem that originated in factory) then you will be taken care of immediately in the field. I could be wrong on this last bit, but I seriously doubt it given the great people involved.

Cheers,

One thing I was wondering if people "who are almost there" can voluntarily move back in the line (while still reserving a place) so those of us with money in hand can get a camera sooner? This would give them extra time give those who need it, it would give those of us chomping at the bit the product sooner, default on fewer cameras.

So they put the serial numbers on cameras out of order. Does it really matter?

Not that I am trying to jump the line, I just want to give a little extra time to those in need :)

It would also be nice if RED let existing owners buy replacement cameras out of this pool if their cameras were lost, stolen, dropped in the ocean, etc. Anyone who's not insane will have insurance, of course, but losing the camera could still be extremely bad for business if you had to get back in line and wait 8 months to get a replacement.

We will give reservation holders 30 days to finalize the purchase. Then the camera goes into the demp pool. That only seems fair.

We are open to suggestions (reasonable)...

Jim

My suggestion is that if someone is unable to pony up the full funds they could pay $1000 towards final purchase to then have another 30 days up to a maximum of 90 days. Some of your reservation holders are big guys or businesses who can pull $17500 whenever they want, while some are guys who have only used MiniDV cameras and are going to have to figure out how to pawn off first borns before taking their Red reserve home :-)

If the bun ain't already in the oven, I don't think they're gonna make it...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

How many will you need in the demo pool? What if 30% of the reservation holders don't follow through -- would you truly need 300 cameras in the demo pool?

Why not just allow other reservation holders to move up a spot in the line? That seems to make everyone happy. If I was #952 or something and had to wait an extra two months to get mine because you guys manufactured an extra 250 or 300 units that were now consigned to go to demos or whatever, well...

I know that I would just prefer that you'd allow us all to jump up a spot in line, just like any line where people drop out. When I'm on standby for a flight, if there's an available seat, I want it; I don't care if my assigned seat is somewhere else or not.

Demos can wait, but in the early days especially when the Red first hits, there might be some serious change to be made in early adopter rentals...

I guess I would really be surprised if 30% of the reservation holders didn't follow through. If that is the case, we would need to re-think our policy. I would be shocked if that many put up the $1000 deposit, waited this long, then cancelled. I guess anything is possible, so as we have said before... things can change. Whatever the case is, we will try our best to be fair.

Jim

30% would be an extreme example, of course. Just using the extreme to illustrate the point. If the grand total of those who don't follow through is 4 or 5, then I can see the demo pool idea working.

Being fair is all we can ask. We as reservation holders want our product as soon as practical, so if there's reason to revisit the policy and allow us sooner access, that would be most well received. Thanks!

Hi Chris,

Yeah, of course I have insurance on all my gear. Your right one would have to be insane not too... haha. I was referring to one's RED having a problem that originated in camera from the factory-- a defect--not operator error.

Since this is a brand spanking new and unproven system, the possiblity of complications exists. Jim has stated that customer service is his top priority after delivery. I don't doubt his resolve...

Chris you are correct, it would be devasting for my business as a lighting cameraman/director for me to lose the camera for any length of time due to whatever reason. I have watched many a bonehead move by those that rent gear and trash it ( I will not repeat the stories here- some of these guys read this forum). So I will not be renting out my camera without me attached as the operator-- though mainly I will be creating the content for many genres...

Cheers,

Andrew

Barry, I agree. I could use the RED system now. I have Broadcast and Corporate clients very excited over how this will impact them without the expense of 35mm acquisition. RED is literally opening up a whole new market for me that I couldn't touch without an Arri, the support crew and extensive grip/lighting packages that come with it. The flexibilty, image quality, ergonomics and lesser support crew have me stoked! The ability to go out and shoot an incredibly high quality demo on my own dime and time and present this back to the client in a darkened boardroom to exhibit these capabilities without queastion is going to be insane and profitable.

I think a figure like 30% would only happen if people feel the final product won't deliver on specs and image quality. I don't think this is likely :)

The 30 day grace period is acceptable if some forewarning is given as to when cameras will be ready to ship. Say my camera will be ready in July, if I know this in May, then I have two months to arrange the money, plus the 30 day grace period. Plenty of time (I hope).

Hi,

I find it odd that people would order a camera without having the cash or finance available to pay for it.

Had the reservations been options that could be sold, that would be another matter.

Stephen

I think - and I know I will probably be pretty alone with this opinion - that the idea of ALL the cameras of the cancelled orders putting into demos and such, is a great idea.
If I would be a great director - which I'm not - working with a huge crew, where every day lost costs thousands of dollars, it would be nice to know that I don't have to worry about having a replacement camera immediately if something broke down.
I don't have personal experience with it, but if I remember reading that Panavision, if something breaks or stops working, you can have a replacement within 2 hours, in LA.
If more camera's are put at the side, then there is more security that replacements will come sooner. I think that's more important than having the camera a bit earlier - although I understand why that can be very important to people who have planned a feature, too.

But remember it is a reservation, not an order, placed when delivery timing was at best very vague. The nature of the reservation is fundamentally speculative and non-committal, so it should be no suprise that a number of reservations would come from people who were not sure exactly how they would raise the funding to complete the purchase at the time when they placed the reservation.

I hope RED will have a base in Europe too, so in case of camera failure one doesn´t have to wait weeks till replacement will arrive from US.
