HVX or A1?

Wow this comment made me realize I haven't seen him on here in a while. What happened to him?

I think its interesting that people are even taking the time to compare the XH A1 and the HVX. An XH A1 can be had for $3500, litterally half of a typical usable HVX rig. I totally agree 100% that the HVX is better. And I 100% prefer DVCPROHD and 4:2:2 color.

But I'm right in the middle of a huge niche market that Canon has struck: people that want an HVX but just can't come up with the dough.

So there's my two cents; if you can afford an HVX and any necessary P2 cards/readers/hard drives/laptops to go with your work flow, buy it. If you can only scrape up $3500 and you're ready to go shooting, the XH A1 is an incredible deal and will still allow you to create content that will wow audiences.

Great cameras to fit all sorts of budgets. Good times right now.

Phil I tend to agree but your missing one important aspect. Ability to use p2 workflow. Now this could be due to many factors, for example a guy shooting a run and gun doc, wedding, eng, basically anything in the field that is very mobile. Assume as the bigger p2s come out this will change a bit, but 16gb are exe, 32 ? WoW.

It could also be as simple as a guy lives in Tokyo. Theres no where to park your car. Everything has to be carted on a train, camera, support, lighting - lucky to get away with much of anything.

Having been through DVX100b, XL2, XH-Al and HVX200 in real life, this is my little humble conclusion

Canon has the sharp "I am High Def" immediate reality tv video look.

Panasonic has the dreamy 16mm film look.

For the XH-A1, unless you want to use that $3800 (cheapest from legit dealer) as a deck, add $ 1000 for the HV10, then factory in all the tapes that you have to buy monthly if not weekly.

I thought Hi-Def was supposed to look like.... Hi-Def.

3500 is the official cheapest from legit dealer deal, and you can buy a firestore fs-4 or fs-C instead of another deck.

I had the chance to play with and view the XH-A1 today at Bel-Air camera, and I brought my HVX200 with me. I'm officialy saying that the A1's image, in my opinion, is a lot cleaner and much-more pleasing. Got to connect them to a Pro-HD Monitor, playback footage, etc.

But boy does tape suck now. There's no way in hell I would go without a Firestore or some external device mounted at all times. I couldn't do it. Otherwise, the A1 is the winner in image department, for me.

High def exist in many different flavors just as SD and ED has variations. The point should be that everyone that gonna buy a cam for over 3500$ and up, should look what cam gives them the picture they want and give them the workflow they need. And that they dont spend more money then they can afford.

Great point. I think I was thinking more along the lines of resolution. But, yeah.

Anyway, glad to know there's another option out there.
