Free 8gb P2 card!? What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?

Assuming Panasonic really is going to give away $1000 8gb p2 cards with every hvx purchase for the next 2 months...what does this mean?

Are they trying to get rid of hvx stock to clear the way for some kind of upgrade next year?

Maybe a new lcd?

Or avchd or avcintra support?

The way I look at it, they are trying to accelerate the adoption of P2, and they are blowing out the 8GB cards in preparation for the 16GB cards.

I think THoff is probably more accurate. The HVX is brand new; it's only been in Europe & Australia and Asia for about 7 months!

With this deal Panasonic USA effectively squashes gray market sales. Jan has always been pretty agressive about adding value to Panasonic USA's products with great add-ons like Barry's books and other goodies. An 8 GB P2 card is one big carrot. They also make the initial purchase of a P2 card a non-issue. Let's face it, an $1150 P2 card is a hurdle for some potential purchasers and this deal is going to drive a lot of HVX200 and future P2 sales. I'd be shocked if an HVX200a was coming anytime soon, but I would like to hear Barry Green's opinion on the odds of an AVC-Intra firmware update for the HVX200 ever being available.

This promotion is happening probably because of so many people sitting "on the fence" about buying a HVX because of the "high prices of P2, scared to ditch tape, uneducated about the format, etc, etc.."
This is going to be a good thing for sales.

What about Europe???????

I think there will be an update of the HVX200 next year. The lifecysle of electronic equipment is about 1.5 year. So a HVX200a with an improved LCD/viewfinder, flip image and some other minor improvements and the availability of 16 Gb P2 cards (the need of the P2 store is than not necessary anymore which saves costs) will increase the sales/acceptance of this cam/P2 technology.

Impossible; you'd need a new hardware encoding chip to handle AVC encoding. It'd have to be a hardware upgrade, not a downloadable software firmware upgrade.

If AVC-HD or AVC-Intra were ever to be part of the HVX, it'd have to be on a future model with hardware changes.

How to get this crazy offer.

How to get this crazy offer.

So I just got the HVX and was notified that I could get a free 8gig P2 card. This is great news because I really can't afford anything else right now. But the big question is where do I go to get this crazy thing. I have looked on the site and can only find information on 2 p2 Cards for a different camera. So if anyone has any info on where I need to go I will be very Happy.

I second (third?, fourth?...) the Canada division issue. The book I happily bought extra... but this?... I got mine in late July and in Canada (from a big authorized rep...)... Why can't Panasonic offer the same deal in Canada like soooo many other companies do?
When it's an item as big as this, it's sort of an insult to the people who bought legal cameras from qualified dealers in countries other than the states.

One suggestion.

How about a coupon for all registered users as of Oct. 31 to buy a 8 Gb price at half price or cost.

Now that would be a reward for a bunch of us.

Barry's book is a prize, but I can't capture any footage to it, and it won't fit in the p2 card slot.

:-)

I would rather they give away 2 4 gig card, so it completes the cycle. Instead, this forces people to buy another p2 card in order to complete the shoot-swap-download cycle. They are smart.

another HVX forum indicates the Panasonic offer goes live on Nov 1st.

just to clarify, i believe that the nov.1st date is when the offer will appear on the website, but if you've purchased anytime after oct. 1st, you qualify for the offer.

would be great if we could get panny to verify these terms.

Same as us in Australia... bought 2 8 gig cards and I'm looking at 1 more... kinda a slap in the face as the cards cost me $2250AUS a pop...
