Who's rattled Sonys cage

I think they could never price it competitively with the RED. Their hands are tied by their own business model of absurdly expensive professional cameras. So unless they bring it below 100K, the point is moot.

"Company executives estimated that it will take two to three years to release the camera and system"

Is this a joke ? Please...

Around about the same time as the 8k Red Two then :)

I am fascinated by RED's price point (currently one fifth of the cinealta) and capabilities (4k leap over cinealta's 1080p not to mention variable frame rates...list goes on and on). It will be interesting to see if Sony could ever afford to drop their cinealta below 20,000 next year when RED is out in the wild and all the skeptics are silenced.

RED: I cost 17,500
SONY: HA, I cost 5 times more than you, therefore I am superior.
RED: Nice, I shoot 4k..and you?
SONY: Lets not talk about that.

If you take the skeptics far enough out in the wild, you won't need to use a silencer. Oh... Nevermind...

That would also (apart from RED price) fascinate me.... and what would cost a XDCAM then :-)

hooking up 4 mysterium sensors for 8k.. Nicce.

sorry guys... the 4K red already surpases imax (to my beleif)... here's my little linkywinky. Niccce.

Red Imax 3D with smellavision(tm)!

Of course, given the high price of smello-drives and the 8k workflow, it'll really start to cost you more like 40,000!!

Then again, I guess it's supposed to be future proof. I'll be fine if I can just shoot 3D 4k for now, that's good enough for most.

I think that IMAX is eq to 11k (and even more) as posted in another thread somewhere here ;p)

Jim has cited 3.2K as being about the maximum imageable resolution of 35mm film. I am going to assume that is for super 35mm, with a width of 24.89mm. Based on that spec Imax should have a theoretical maximum resolution of about 11.2k width, but as the format is 3x4 not 16x9 you would need a sensor with 8.4k vertical resolution to achieve that. If we assume RED is going to stick with 16x9 sensors then the sensor would need to be able to image a resolution of about 15k. Assuming we lose up to 30% of the imageable resolution in the optical low pass filter then the sensor needs to be approx 21k! That figure is nonsense in the real world of course but it matches up with the maximum you could theoretically get with film.

In reality film suffers all sorts of losses by the processes you go through from camera to projection. Check out this thread: http://www.cinematography.net/Pages%20DW/IMAX15perf_70mmTechSpecs.htm the last 3 posts are particularly telling. They imply that Red footage would probably just about hold up in an imax presentation, though I think it would be pushing it a touch.
