October Red Update

Just a little update for you guys that haven't been following the Red news in the last couple weeks or who missed some of the info that got burried in the posts.

-Red.com has plenty of footage in 4k, 2k and 1k video segments on its website.. check the Gallery for the clips. Footage was shown in 4k at IBC, and will show shortly in Hollywood and NY.

-Reservations for Red one end Oct. 31st. All reservation holders are guaranteed the $17,500 camera and display price. Im not sure if the price of the body will go up, but It looks like non-reservation holders will not receive the same package the same price as those that put $$$ up by the end of the month. Reservation holders also get Red-Cine for no-charge. No guarantees on that later. About 700 cameras have been reserved.

- Camera ship date looks to be late in the 1st quarter 2007.

- There was a theft at Red's headquarters a few weeks ago, but they persevered and the Red swat team was able to recover many items.

- Lens Reservations also close at the end of the month.. The 300mm lens is due near camera release, and the Zoom is due later in the year.

Looking forward to the Hollywood screening. I'd love to meet you guys face-to-face.

Now if only I had the money for a reservation.

There's presently no good way to distribute 4K video in a format that any significant number of people can reasonably play. Even leaving aside the fact that basically nobody has a 4K display, any codec I can think of will either require too much processing power, too much disk performance, or both, at 4K.

2K video would be nice, though.

there will be 4k onsite meaning in a theater in hollywood and NY. Nobody can really play 4k videos yet as mentioned on a computer.

2k isnt out of the world though, and im sure that will come.

Jarred,

Can you confirm a rumor I heard regarding reservation holders getting a surprise accessory package with their RedOne camera body... could this be true? Are we up for a JJ Red Brigade April fool?

Kindly confirm as you may.

Oni.

great update jarred. i've been keeping up with all the RED news, but it's nice that you condensed it in a single post. i only need one more paycheck to reserve the red. it's going to be a GREAT investment, especially considering all the mentionables.

October Street Update

October Street Update

I spent the day at the New York Cine Equipment Show trying to push all the buttons on the Genesis and see how fast I could rack the Primo Zoom between 17.5 and 75. Also wasted time figuring out how I could rip off an Arri 416 without anybody noticing but I was not successful.

Anyway, I asked all the camera people I talked to at the show what they thought about Red. My informal survey turned up a resounding general attitude of "THEY CAN'T DO IT/WON'T HAPPEN."

But it is happening. We have all seen it.

Anyway, sorry to break the news to Jim and the team but even AFTER you deliver the cameras at the end of Q1 next year with even nicer footage than we've seen so far and a usable workflow, IT WON'T HAPPEN. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

As I've said before, I think there are a lot of people who've been in the film/video production industry for years, who are just so used to the high prices and slow product development cycles there that they believe this is the only way things can work.

My background is more in the software field, so while I don't mean to downplay what RED is doing at all (on the contrary, I'm well aquatinted with the effort and skill that rapid innovation requires), I'm extremely unsurprised that it's possible. And it's also unsurprising that RED's development model looks very much like the development model used by some of the most successful new software companies. A small team of extremely smart and dedicated people can accomplish far more, far faster, than a much larger team of merely average developers (and ends up costing a lot less too; I wonder why more companies haven't figured this out).

Thanks for keeping us posted Jarred. Be sure to let us know when we can buy tickets the the 4K screening I'll come pack up the SUV with Booz and Me and the boys will come down.

So the price for the camera keeps creeping up and up. That's too bad for those without the money right now. First the EVF went from being included to being a seperate purchase, and now this heavy hinted announcement that RedCine software is going to cost extra.

So... what kind of package changes are we looking at? Will the purchase price of the body be different depending on how many accessories are simultaneously purchased along with it, or is the body price going to be different regardless of the other purchases?

Also, if you're now potentially charging for the RedCine software, can we at least expect to get a free .DLL from your company so that we can create our own software to interface with the RedOne?

If reservation holders would get more for their money that others, it might be because Red team wants to thanks those people for the trust they have put in Red project...

It would be very nice (as I'm holding a reservation :-)

But all theses are speculations, so it might not be the case...

Thanks JRED for keeping us update,
antoine.

Hi Lowkus... I don't ever remember that the EVF was to be included with the base camera... just the external panel. Maybe my memory is fuzzy...
