I would like clarification on this "single computer" thing as well. I was about to buy it, but I am running of a laptop in the field and a Desktop at home. Not being able for the program to be installed on both computers is kind of deal breaker for me. Also, I'll be updating my Desktop whenever the Intel Mac Towers come out, and I would hope I can transfer it over to that machine when it does. Let me know. I'm happy to buy the product if I can do this, but if I have to buy it twice right now, I think I'll rethink it.

Gary - Why does it seem that we can get complete in-depth technical answers from you, but not an answer in regards to the "Single Computer" install questions? Does the activation tie it ONLY to the first computer it is installed on as the after purchase email seems to hint at? Are we able to move the install from one computer to another if we get a new one???

I really like the product, and am just looking for clarification.

That would be because software companies are comprised of more than just programmers, who in larger companies, aren't allowed to speak directly to customers. [Try to get an Apple developer on the phone....;-)]

Seriously folks, I don't know why you're so worried about this. It's not like you change computers as often as underwear. And as technology changes so quickly, the likelihood of your software needing an upgrade at the time your computer/OS upgrades is pretty good.

If you change out your computer for a new one or because the old one got trashed, drop us an email and we'll help you. We're honest Hoosiers and hope you're an honest user.

Well, all the software I have on my computer right now will transfer to a new machine without me contacting the software company.

New Macs are coming out now, quite often. I just went from a 450/G5 to a dual 2.0 G5 to a 17" PowerBook to train with, and work in the field with, and a Quad Core G5. All of this within a year and a half. NONE of my applications ever required I "work with" the software company to make the switch.

Normally, the agreement is that you can only use one instance of the application on one computer at one time. Shake being the only exception I personally know of.

And all the software companies I've worked for and contracted to in my former IT career, there was never any huge communication gap between departments. Someone asks tech support about a license question, they get an answer right away, period.

So, you guys actually DO seem to have a non-standard license agreement. So when I upgrade to an Intel Mac, I have to jump hoops with you to make the switch? Simply not acceptable practice to me, personally. Especially not for $100.

As for changing computers often, well, I've been doing this full time for a lot of years, and yes, I do go through computes pretty often. More than you may imagine. And that's not even the point. Point is, you tie us to a specific machine in a way no one else normally does. So if I want to run this in the field on my PowerBook, when my Quad Core is turned off in the studio, I can't? This would be the first software app I use in this way in which the license agreement does not allow for that type of use.

It's that simple.

Almost sorry I spent the $100 if that's the attitude I get, "take it or leave it, then 'trust us'".

I gotta say that what you just said is complete and utter NONSENSE! could you listen to what people are asking instead of SPINNING the question to fit your answer.

question. very simple.

Many of us edit on our desktops and use our laptops in the field,
Do we need to purchase two licenses? one for each computer?

This will be the first for me to find an app at this price point to force the customer to purchase a licensee per computer instead of per user.

"If you change out your computer for a new one or because the old one got trashed, drop us an email and we'll help you. We're honest Hoosiers and hope you're an honest user."

I just gotta laugh at this answer. Are you a comedian?

waiting for an answer....

And to think we thought you guys came to your senses by decreasing or offering a p2 viewer at a good price. Sounds like you guys are just repackaging what is an overpriced app (HD log) via p2 Log that in the long term will be as expensive for the customer.

I have two mac laptops and a dual G5. I'm selling my dual for the new gen in Q4.

Clearly ya'll don't buy Microsoft products, Intuit, or Adobe for that matter...

P2 Log is licesned by the computer, not the user, and requires web access.

HD Log is licensed by the user, not the computer and does not require web access, you may be better off with it if you think you have to move the software frequently.

(My mother taught me insulting people isn't a good way to get what you want...and for the record, Gary did come to me to get the license question answered.)

I'm amazed at some of the feelings towards Dan and Gary. They have pretty much responded to every call we have made regarding their products and there has already been updates to the software which was released on Monday.

With regard to the licensing questions, this all seems quite familiar to me, except when I have a dongle protected program, the software is a single machine license. The only exception to that seems to be Final Cut Studio, but Apple clearly have another agenda. Try Automatic Duck if you want to see some tough love licensing.

Gary has made it very clear that they will help you move to a new machine if thats what you need to do and seeing as how we are able to either get replies from them here or via email in no time at all, with a little bit of foresight there should be no need for any downtime when your new machines arrives.

If you want this app on both your laptop and your desktop then get two copies, its $99 for gods sake. They have worked damn hard to make this stuff work and seem very conscientious to fix anything that doesn't. The very popular P2 Genie is another app completely tied to the one machine. This is normal. Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere all tied to a machine. You can transfer the license using Adobe's well designed and integrated license transfer system - that system alone was probably developed by more people than actually work at Imagine. You can still transfer your license with P2 Log it just requires an email or two and as a result the cost of the software can be kept lower and the customer wins.

Rant over.

Asking us to spend $100 (which I have already done) and not being able to move it over when we get a new or upgraded system is ridiculous. Expecting to 'punish' us because we upgraded by having to repurchase seems to disrespect the very people that are supporting your efforts.

Maybe you're not reading all the posts here, but Dan has already said quite clearly that he would help you move the license if you have a new machine.

I stand by my position.

Also needing web access to activate this app is also an issue.
Middle of africa preparing my shoot. Lap top gets wet by torrential rain. I unpack my new laptop. Install software: logic, FCP, Adobe apps etc. then I get to p2 Log. in the middle of the nowhere no webaccess. no p2. Oh right maybe I could call the people at p2 Log and spend 15 dollars on my sim card. That would n't work cause I would need to purchase a New license. **** this app would suck in that viable scenerio, happens all the time with documentarians on the run.

Or how about if you're in the US and have no web access, on location? Why should I pay 300 for this app in order to install it on my two laptops that i use and desktop at home?

This is so flawed.

If reliability is an issue and no downtime can be acceptable due to lack of net connect, maybe the more expensive versions that use a usb dongle might be a better option...

Someone still uses a dongle with their software? Isn't that pretty 1980's?

Hardly, but at times I almost prefer it to the other ways in effect with Adobe apps, deinstall and deauthorizing some plug ins, etc.

Actually, Adobe software does not work the same way as P2 Log does. You can install it on more than one computer:

"The Adobe product license agreement allows the primary user to install the product on a primary computer and also on a home or laptop computer for his or her use, provided that the two copies are not used simultaneously."

http://www.adobe.com/products/activation/

That said, I have no problem with the way P2 Log is licensed. Would I like to have it installed on a primary and secondary computer? Sure. However, it's so useful, that $200 is a small price to pay for being able to use it on two computers. I'm also glad to hear that I'll be able to move it to a Intel Power Mac G5 replacement. I think P2 Log is a great deal.

fh

How about offering a discount on a scondary or other subsequent licenses? $100 for the first and additional $50 for second, and $30 per license thereafter. That would make more sense to me. It's likely that they all wouldn't get used the same amount of time.

I need 2 licenses myself, but am reluctant to buy any at all knowing I'll need to spend $200 for my existing PowerMac and MacBook Pro and then another $100 if I change to an Intel PowerMac when they come out. All I really need it for is to view the clips of shots in the field and that's it, not really for logging.

I just purchased P2 Log and am having blast with it. I agree, Imagine can charge whatever they want for the app. If they want to make the app married to a single computer as their business model, so be it, they are the developers.

They also have the only Mac solution at this price point so if I were them, I would keep the model. Sooner or later, someone will introduce a comparable or even better product, then Imagine will have to react by improving the app or by sharing the license between multiple machnes. It's called capitalism. If the market doesn't like their terms, they will not sell enough units and will have to bend to the market's demands. But I bet they are selling a boatload of P2 Logs.

Enjoy!

This is so flawed.

If you are doing this kind of work you should do a bit of planning and arrange everything before you go to a place without internet. Like contacting the software company and arranging some sort of time limited key you can use in the outback. Shoots recuire production planning....
