New P2 Log software for Macintosh users

just a few small notes:

Settings for exported DVCPRO HD 720p clips seems wrong:

- Pixel aspect is set to 1440x1080 and not 960x720
- Clips are upper field dominant, should it not be None (progressive.)

Also there appears to be a bug with Previewing (scrubbing over certain Plug-ins when they are unrendered:

Pixel Aspect and Field Dominance should be determined automatically in FCP by the fact that the QuickTime file has DVCPRO HD 720p video. I'm not sure where the 1440x1080 is coming from.. what does the Frame Size show up as? I will try to override the Field Dominance in the XML for 25p/50p video.

The unrendered problem indicates that FCP or the plugin is pulling the video through some other decompressor component that I don't know about (or it is trying to latch onto Apple's component for some reason). The component I do know about is DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component, that is installed in /Library/QuickTime (move that component to a different location if it is installed, as it tries to override my component). The component I override is named DVCPROHDCodec.component.

Very nice, long over due.

How will p2 log work with offloading clips from a cineporter or a p2 store?

will it recognize the drives? If so, could you give us details on this.

Either you can copy the folders onto a hard drive (that's what I prefer to do, so I have a pristine copy of my MXF media on a hard drive) and then "Open P2 Volume" in P2 Log (for viewing or coverting to QuickTime) or simply mount the P2 Store on the Desktop and access the drive partitions from P2 Log just like you would a Card mounted on the desktop or copy of a card in a Folder via the "Open P2 Volume" command. In other words, P2 Log can read any folder, P2 card, or mouted volume, that looks like a P2 card.

I've only use a P2 Store and P2 Cards (in Cardbus) as well as the camera via FireWire for ingest, have not had a chance to play with Cineporter or FireStore.

I've had no problem opening Firestore in P2 log either with Firestore mounted via firewire or from MXF's copied to hard drive. Of course, the firestore has no thumbnail at the moment, but you can definitely play the footage and do everything else that P2 log does. So glad it released in time for my article so I could be ungagged.

I am interested in this software, but I must know, does P2 log read long clips that have been split?

I'm using the FS-100 which splits clips every 2:18. So I'm wondering if P2 log recognizes this, or lets me choose which clips should be imported as 1 long file. Or am I misunderstanding the point of this software? Is it a naming/organizing software only?

I tested this last night and it seems P2 Log also sees these as separate clips. However this was on the demo which only allows one clip to be imported, its possible with the full version that something clever happens when you are able to bring all the files in, but I don't think its there.

P2 Log is a clip viewer only and will display each P2 clip separately, including those that have been split due to file size restrictions. It might eventually rejoin split clips in the same P2 volume, but I don't see it rejoining clips split across multiple volumes, due to the way the app is setup.

I'm having a little problem, don't know if I'm just not seeing the right button or what. But I'm using the PC slot on my powerbook to read the P2 cards. Everything works fine, but then I want to eject the P2 card and read another card. I will "close" the session on that P2 card, but when I try to eject the P2 card in the finder it says it is still in use. In p2 log the clip is still showing in the window, so I assume p2 log is still using that P2 card. I couldn't seem to figure out how to stop P2 log from "using" the p2 card without completely quiting the program, ejecting the p2 card, putting in the new p2 card, then strarting up the P2 app again. Is there an easier way to do this? (I'm on the demo, don't know if it's different for the full version)

I'm putting together a package of updates, I'll see if I can do something about the 'card in use' problem.

Fast forward, reverse, and fast reverse playing on a Dual Core G5 is pretty glitchy. Pretty much non-fuctional. This is a single 2 minute clip.

Have you removed the DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component from the Quicktime components folder? I'm fairly sure this is what causes the 'interference'.

From Imagine's site regarding the passthrough codec:
"For proper YUV operations, move the /Library/QuickTime/ DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component to a different folder location."

I think Mark's right. I had the same thing until I removed the codec and also restarted my machine.
