Zoom H4N-H1 audio line out direct to mic in on 7D, recommended?

Hi
I've read various suggestions on using audio direct from the Zoom H4N or H1 direct to the mic in on the 7D.

Is there any way that the in-camera audio will be of good quality, thru lowering the input gain and output on the zoom to match impedance), or will the AGC on the 7D always destroy the quality?

I had my tech guys made me an attenuated plug which controls the volume fromthe ear out of the zoom into the 7D. But after some tests its not worth it. Better leave your 7d mic open as a guide track and record audio on the h4n and just use the out for proper headphone monitoring. The attenuated plugs i have splits the output, one for a headphone and another to go into the 7D, problem is, the "acceptable" volume for the 7D is too low for my headphones.

Besides , the agc still ruins proper recording.

Yeah, don't waste your time. The output of the H4N is really really bad. The recordings it makes are pretty good, and sound much better than the headphone jack will lead you to believe.

The AGC will always destroy the quality - nothing you can do about that. However, I take the output of the Zoom H4n via a splitter cable in to the 7D and also to headphones. This way I can still monitor the audio with headphones and also get a good sync track on the 7D for when I use plural eyes. Leaving the 7D open mic does not get any of the remote microphone stuff I need for sync, i.e. the 7D can't hear any of the wireless input to the Zoom, so I take what the zoom is hearing and feed it to the 7D instead of letting the 7D use it's own (terrible) mic.

Wonder about now...trying this trick with the v2 firmware and manual gain control.

Is the problem STILL the poor quality of the H4's headphone out?

Well Magic Lantern's on its way for the 7D, so I wouldn't worry so much about the AGC. That said, I'd still 100% leave the recordings in the zoom.

edit: which leads me to wonder why you'd bother running audio to the 7D at all. Is it a sync issue? Pluraleyes is your new best friend.

With the ML hack which disables the AGC, isn't the audio quality of the audio recorded in camera from the H4N, identical in quality to the audio recorded by the H4N??
